Another thought I wanted to add: My wife and I also abstain from meat every Friday. However, I do occasionally substitute another penance as permitted, since I have a personal weakness for slipping into legalism and must remind myself it is the spirit of the Law and not the letter which is important, otherwise we risk becoming pharisaical. So I do choose another route sometimes just so I do not lose my way.
Anyone else have this problem? You start doing it just because you are supposed to and not remembering why?
That was part of why I lapsed as a Catholic for nearly 2 decades. That and other āissuesā I had with the Catholic Church. Fully willful on my part.
I am now attending Mass on a regular basis. I am so excited to be doing so. Although, last week I had a few moments while sitting in Mass of, āCan we hurry up and finish already?ā I think itās normal simply because we are human beings.
We get caught up in what is going on around us since it is physically (to the senses) immediate. We get tired. We get hungry. We get annoyed. We get irritated. We get angry.
But! We also get happy. We get joyful. We get excited.
Prayers help. Reading and learning about my faith has really helped to keep me excited about it. Iām learning it as an
adult now. I am finding that so many people get stuck in an elementary view of what the Catholic church is and what the faith is that it keeps their spirituality immature and stagnant. I know I was caught up in that for a couple of decades.
IMO, I think itās normal for us as human beings. That is not to say that absolves of us our responsibility to continue practicing our faith and learning about it.

For me, thatās what is helping to keeping it exciting for me. Like, starting to practice meatLess Fridays.
