Is it a requirement for Holy Week to be meatless? My husband said something about Wednesday and beyond to be meatless. So Wednesday to holy Saturday? Is this a requirement? (And I am aware that Good Friday is meatless.) Or just traditional preference?

One may consume meat during Holy Week under the current regulations in the Latin Church, save for on Good Friday, which is a day of fasting and abstinence.

While you can certainly do this if you want to — it could be a very spiritually fruitful penitential practice — abstinence from meat only binds on the day of Good Friday. The other days of Holy Week, you can eat meat, or anything else, as you desire.

Thank you for your response! I have another question regarding fasting. I figured I’d just ask here instead of making a new topic. I have recently become pregnant and I am struggling with morning sickness that just about lasts all day. To combat the symptoms I’ve been munching on crackers and pretzels and that has somewhat helped. I’m worried about Good Friday and being completely incapacitated with sickness, as morning sickness manifests itself as nausea and vomiting and keeping something simple in your stomach is one of the best ways to keep it at bay. And obviously you can only eat a few small meals on Good Friday and no snacking. Because I am pregnant, am I permitted to not fast? Or should I still fast? If I must I will, I just don’t want to sin.

Since you’re pregnant, I would say that you have a health condition which excuses you from the fast and abstinence.

A very long time ago, we used to have refrain from meat during Lent on BOTH Wednesdays and Fridays.

Also, before Vatican II (not sure when it ended exactly) we used to have to fast on BOTH Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

So your husband MIGHT have misunderstood what the traditional abstinence and fasting rules used to be

It used to be all of Lent–and still is in much of the East . . .
Yes, that too
