Not sure if this is the correct place to ask my question ? I have a Catholic medal I found in our parish and sought to find its owner to no avail so am keeping it( until I find its owner) I don’t its significance and would like to know. On one side it has Pope John 2 wit Roma and on the other side our Blessed Mother with the child. Jesus in her arms and the words: S Maria de Perpeiuo (?) Succursu (?) OPN. Wondering if anyone could let me know what medal this is and the translation/ significance. Thank you!

St. John Paul II and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Holy Mary of Perpetual Help) it would seem.

OPN is the latin abrev. for Pray for us (Ora pro nobis)

I would imagine it is one of the medals one easily finds in shops for pilgrims in Rome, if it uses “Roma”.

The title in Italian for Our Lady of Perpetual Help is rendered as Santa Maria del Perpetuo Soccorso and the original image of this title of Our Lady is kept in the Church of Saint Alphonsus, which is just a few blocks down the street from Saint Mary Major. That is to say, it is a major image of Our Lady in Rome.

OPN is the Latin for ora pro nobis…pray for us. It remains a well known abbreviation for those who are Italian…although you also see PPN, prega per noi…pray for us.

If the original owner bought the medal before attending a papal audience and had the medal with him, it would have a papal blessing.

Just a suggestion, but if it is possibly a medal the original owner purchased while in Rome, you might consider asking the parish secretary or pries if you could put a note in the bulletin: “found: a medal, possibly purchased in Rome; please contact (and your information)”. The owner will be able to identify what is on the medal.

The person might not know were she lost it, so I would blessed with Holy water and were it,unless there ,s a mane on it. so were it with devotion. AMEN

If I found something in church, I would turn it over to the church office to take care of. They can put a notice in the bulletin and have the person that lost it come on and pick it up.

By the way, many medals say Roma on them, when that is where it is made. But it could have been bought locally or online. It’s not necessarily from someone that went to Rome.

Those medals could also just be relatively inexpensive medals. So don’t worry too much into it. Sometimes I have found a medal or a prayer card randomly in a time when I really needed it in my personal or spiritual life. Take it as a Godsend

The chances of finding the owner are remote. Just hold onto it and share it with someone when they are in need.
