Medals on Rosary Beads

Hey all.

I was wondering, is it okay to have multiple medals on one’s Rosary Beads? I was given a plain set of beads from my grandmother, and you know the bit where the decades link to the crucifix? (That ‘Y’ shaped part), I attached a blessed Miraculous Medal (from my friend), and I also attached medals at the interjunctions between decades (The bead where we say the ‘Glory Be’ and the ‘Our Father’, and if one wants to, the Fatima Prayer). Is this allowed? These are not scapular medals, just ones with whom I feel especially connected to and my devotions (St. Michael, Sacred Heart, Holy Spirit/Child Jesus of Prague, and planning on getting a ‘Guardian Angel’ one). Then when it is ‘complete’, for want of a better word, I want to get the beads blessed as a whole, so that it is ‘my’ rosary, and the medals are devotions or attributes of the faith I feel particulary connected to.

I was basically wondering if it is ok, or in some ways, ‘illegal’.
 
i don’t see why you can’t, but I’m not an expert on these things.

It is perfectly alright. I know a Dominican priest, they wear a large Rosary at their waist. This particular priest has different medals all along the Rosary at different points of each mystery. He uses them as reminders of devotional prayers and of continual intentions. The beads are quite worn and takes on a kind of beauty all its own.
So you go ahead and place the medals on your Rosary,…just as long as you don’t see them as charms or something like that 😃 .

lol, that would be kinda weird. Does anyone else here have rosary beads (this may seem a kinda bogus question), and if they do, what do you do with them? Carry them around with you, wear them round your neck or keep them safe. What colour is the rosary? Do you have a plain cross, or a benedictine crucifix etc?
 
Well, if that just didn’t give me an idea of what to do with all the medals that I’m not wearing…put them on my Rosary! Good idea!

Okay, so Archus…Rosaries are everywhere in my house, over my statue of Mary, in night stand draws, hanging over lamp shades…however, I have (and I hate to call it this) a cigarette case…know what I’m talking about? I put my Rosary and Crucfix, holy oil and holy water in that, keep it in my purse.

I have mostly twine hand made rosaries (they are quiet), my favorite one is an olive wood rosary, blessed by a Priest from Nigeria, I have a red glass bead rosary…and a very big, Francisian Crown rosary…it’s wood of course…

Wow, I imagine that you get some really powerful graces using a Rosary like that!!! 👍
 
in response to the OP’s question, I think I heard that the rosary is a private devotion, so I’m fairly sure attaching medals is ok (I think it’s kinda cool). Actually, I found out that there are different ways of starting and ending the rosary: some begin with the Apostle’s Creed, others begin with “O God, come to my assistance; O Lord make haste to help me.” Some end with Hail Holy Queen, others end with Sub tuum Praesidium (We Fly to Your Patronage) followed by the Litany of Loreto. I like how the Rosary has flexibility like that 🙂

to respond to Archus, I have a bunch of rosaries. I actually have been making twine rosaries (blue and white, with crucifixes or twine crosses when I run out of crucifixes), and I’m planning on donating them to our local Catholic hospital or to my parish. I have a wood bead Divine Mercy Rosary (the Our Father beads have the Divine Mercy Image on front and Mary on back), a wood bead Mary Undoer of Knots Rosary, a couple plastic Rosaries (one’s hanging from my rearview mirror), and lastly I carry my black Rosary from the Knights of Columbus in a case (with my St. Michael Chaplet) wherever I go. I was in the habit of carrying one with me, but after I joined the Knights I switched to the one I got. Helps too, because at my council, if you’re not carrying it when you go to meetings, you get fined $1. :cool:

I have a wooden bead rosary with a metal crucifix in the style the Pope has on his crozier. I usually try to keep in in my pocket.

I have a really lovely rosary made of knotted rope made by the husband of a woman I have talked with over at the Coming Hone Network forums. I never have met her in real life, but after talking about rosaries she asked my address and it came in the mail a few days later. I wear it around my neck under my t-shirt so I know I will always have a rosary on me.

To be clear, rosaries aren’t jewelry, but this manner of keeping your rosary on your person - especially one made of knotted string - actually used to be fairly common in sub-saharan Africa. The missionaries would teach the local people how to make them, and they would wear them around their neck as (back then) most still wore the native dress of their nations which did not have pockets. My grandmother had one such twine rosary given to her by a priest who had returned from the African missions years ago.

Sometimes during the day when I am moving around, I feel it under my t-shirt and it makes me remember to pray.
 
I just wanted to share my excitement with you over “customizing” a rosary.

My husband, for Christmas, had a rosary made for me and replaced the separating medals for the decades with individual lockets that contained a picture for each of our children. Two are of his children from a previous marriage and then he printed tiny little angels for the two babies we lost in pregnancy.

It was the most precious Christmas gift I ever received.

Just wanted to share.

You have a thoughtful hubby there lucky lady! (Bet he is lucky too!)

That sounds like one of the sweetest gifts I have heard about in some time. It actually has inspired me on what I may do for an anniversary (non-marriage) that is approaching!
 
I once put my favorite saints medals at the end of each decade so I can offer a quick prayer, asking them to pray for me/special intention/join me in my rosary. But it was easily tangled and a bit clunky…so I went back to my original beads and just do a private litany to my favorite saints at the end. 😊
