**The attack has been so bitter that it prompted a response today from some high-ranking prelates, including Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the head of the Italian bishops’ conference, who accused the media of a “campaign” of abuse toward the pontiff and the Church. Bagnasco said the Church is “not afraid of the truth, however painful and detestable” but opposes “generalised campaigns to discredit it.”

Bishop Gerhard Ludwing Mueller of Regensburg, Germany, also decried “a campaign against the Church,” saying, “[The media] are manipulating the people who sit in front of a television or open up a newspaper with their twisted and shortened reports.”

Even Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, himself no stranger to scandal and media condemnation, condemned the attacks, saying in a statement that the pope and the Church are victims of “prejudiciously hostile feelings.”**

Well, yeah. “Man Bites Dog” sells more papers than “Dog Bites Man.” (I don’t remember where I heard that, so pardon me for not referencing it) People are more willing to believe the worst about people. Gossip and “bearing false witness” are sins for a reason: The temptation is just too great. Like all sins, the temptations are exploited for profit. They’re easy for the populace to fall prey to. That’s why t&a is so popular in advertising.

I was feeling pretty disheartened for the past few weeks. (I even signed up here because of this scandal, looking for answers) When I read the pope’s letter I felt so much better. What the pope said was not at all what I expected (to be honest, I expected excuses). He was harsher than I expected, he was honest, and his letter read to me like he took the thoughts and feelings that have been whirling in my brain and organized them for his letter in a way I only wish I knew how to express.
I felt like he understood what Catholics are feeling right now. I’m not an abuse victim or a parent of an abuse victim, so I don’t know if they felt comforted by his letter or not, but his letter was comforting to me. His anger, his charity, his embarrassment, his pride for the Church, his disappointment in how this situation was handled, his love for Christ, and his plan for taking measures to prevent this from happening again was what I needed to hear from him. Not as a victim (again, I’m not presumptuous to assume this letter should be comforting to the victims), but as a Catholic.

The media is having a field day, true. And of course there is hyperbole. The Church has failed to handle the issue properly in view of the current media penchant for beating a subject to death in a media frenzy. The lessons of Watergate were that denying or avoiding difficult facts turned out to be more damning than what was being covered up. Nothing defangs the media more than open admission of fault and a housecleaning where necessary. To a degree there has been a partial admission of fault, but there has been no concrete action to deal with offenders who are being shielded. This provides ample grist for the media which sees a juicy scandal, and the public loves scandal.

in my opinion, all we can do is take the persecution. after all this was brought upon us by our own leaders. they still go around unrepentent. just look at our bishops, they walk around looking very proud. the scandals continue that our bishops are giving our money to groups that support abortion and gay marriage. do your hear anything changing? the bishops simply hide in their offices. they dont even speak to the people. they just continue on their business as usual.

A lot of these Bishops act more like politicians than shepards.The Pope should start appointing more Bishops from Africa and the parts of Asia where the Church is THRIVING and give them to us here in North and South America.As a matter of fact we should start importing Catholic Missionaries from those countries who are on fire with the faith and evangelise the 80% of us who are Catholic in Name Only.
