Media Effort Draws 92,000 Inactive Catholics Back Home To Church

In Phoenix, an estimated 92,000 Catholics in the Phoenix Diocese have come back to the church in the last year thanks in large part to a groundbreaking television campaign called Catholics Come Home. The commercials which ran during Lent in 2008, detail the good works of the Catholic church throughout history. They also offer real-life testimonials of local fallen away Catholics explaining what turned them away and what drew them back. Praise Jesus. Christ is truly present in the Catholic church.
 
That would represent 16.5% of the Phoenix diocese (according to the last figure I have of 557,000). A notable achievement. I think we can assume that some inactive Catholics remained inactive, my guess would be two to three times as many. These people are basically unchurched, but will say they “used to be Catholic” when some other church reaches them.

If we take this figure and extrapolate across the United States, 16.5% would represent 10,662,000 people who are currently inactive, but reachable, Catholics across the United States at a minimum. That is a huge potential market for some aggressive evangelizer. The Latin Catholic church should fund a vigorous nationwide rollout of this program before it’s too late.

This is an amazing campaign. I seen the founder on EWTN Live and it is defiantly a powerful message. They have a website that has the commercials they play on it. I encourage even Catholics that are in the Church to go and watch them.

If it’s true that there are tens of millions of inactive Catholics in the USA, 92,000, though not nothing, is a drop in the ocean - it leaves those tens of millions of others out of the picture.​

 
16.5% of 23% of America means 3.795% of the country. That’s wonderful! I’d love to see that happen. How many of us are there now, 300 million or 350 million? If there are only 300 million now, that’s still 11,385,000 Americans.
 
Gottle, I have to disagree. This is a tremendous achievement by any measurement…

I don’t think he was being negative, just factual.

This is the first statistical acknowledgment I have seen from any Catholic source of the vastness of the non-practicing Catholic population. Everyone is aware that it is huge, but numbers are difficult to come by.

Thanks for opening a window on the problem.

As I stated earlier, the church in all of the dioceses should attempt to replicate this program, because these people (a considerable percentage) are clearly receptive, but in danger.

It is - that’s not being denied; but there are many times that number who are not included in the stats, & I think it’s very important to keep both sets of figures in mind. FWIW, the figure for conversions in 1980 was 81,000. Whether the figure included reversions, I don’t know. There is also the question of how many have left - unless that is known, the figures of tens of thousands of conversions or reversions lose some of their meaning. If the figure were 100,000, that would still be an average of 2,000 from each of the 50 states.​

Careful with saying that. Some people on this board consider it a dogma of the faith that one must support the Republicans in all things and oppose the Democrats in all things.

Look at how some reacted when Chairmen Steele came out in favor of abortion.

Steele is opposed to abortion, is pro life, and supports overturning Roe V. Wade.

On the 92,000 I’ve heard this report some time ago. Any news on latest developments from this group? This campagin was starting up in 2007 I believe and still they keep talking about there launch how has it been going since then?

I have not as of yet heard any new news on how the Catholics Come Home program is doing. Other than the occasional mailing asking for money.

The program is doing excellent. Many people are coming home AND many are converting to the true church established by Jesus Christ. In droves.

So why does this group never seem to talk about the latest numbers only the ones from the first airing?
