Ok you might or might know about the riots in Ferguson Mo which is a sort of suburb of St. Louis County. We been experiencing riots in the area due of the death of a young African American man and (white or black) police officer. Regardless of the story the media hype has been crazy they report every little peace of hearsay regardless if it is true or not. They reported the wrong name of the officer who was involved and people where going after a policeman who wasn’t even on duty at the time. Getting back to my question what are your thoughts on media responsibility for insighting riots and upheaval just for ratings and keep the mass mad at each other so people don’t see what really going on.

In the UK this was on our news, so the story has gone international.
Unfortunately the media seem to only have a responsibility to make money…and if their news coverage incites riots, that sell more papers…then to them, it is a job well done!
I do agree with a totally free media, in all forms, but some form of ethical self regulation would not go amiss.

I think the police who kill unarmed kids are more responsible for the riots rather than the media who is covering it.

Why riot at all?
Big difference between a demonstration and a riot. These kinds of events seem to be characterized by looting and violence against even minority-owned businesses. That kind of thievery is pure opportunism and goes way beyond objecting to alleged actions of the police.

Ive watched the news here the past 3 days, both morning news and evening, and NOT ONE mention of this…??? LOL How ridiculous is that? Instead they found it better to talk about the gains in the stock market quite a few times today!!

Ive emailed my local news after each news cast, asking them why they arent reporting the national news? as of 10:30pm, not one reply… LOL

Unless you live in a TV market that is near the place where these riots took place, it would be the national news that carried the story, not local newscasts (unless they had a very slow news day and needed to fill time.)

I don’t believe it is the media’s responsibility, though being accurate is.

One thing to keep in mind is that these type of riots are not from one incident. More than likely that community feels that the police have been abusive for years if not decades and this is the spark that blows everything up. Similar stuff happened in LA in the 90s following the Rodney King trial. An anger among a large chunk of the population bubbled up, and yes many opportunist took to looting too.

I watch NBC nightly news every night, this is national news, I have NEVER heard this mentioned on there???

I watch NBC every night, too, and it’s been there. Maybe you were distracted by something and missed it?

This morning, it was the headline story on the Today Show (NBC).

Perhaps I am more attuned to it because my daughter and her husband live in St. Louis.

It’s very scary.

As for the topic of media responsibility, I am furious with the way the media has handled this story. This morning on Today Show, the reporter (African American) actually said in his report, “the injustice done to the unarmed teenager.”

This statement, totally unsubstantiated, serves only to fuel the perception by the people of Ferguson that some kind of injustice has been done.

**We do not know the whole story. **

Yes, it’s possible that the police officer shot and killed the teenager in cold blood with no regard for human life and with total hatred for young black men.

But’s it’s also possible that the unarmed black man threatened the officer in such a way that the officer felt that his own life and/or the lives of others were in imminent danger, and he reacted correctly by defending himself and others.

We need to know the whole story.

Even if the police officer was a monstrous prejudiced white supremist animal who is even now gloating over shooting the young black man and plotting the deaths of more black people, that does NOT give license for citizens black or white or any color to threaten the police, throw bottles and make-shift bombs and even fire guns at them, to loot and destroy the business establishments of fellow citizens, and to riot through the streets after dark terrorizing the neighborhoods, and to create such mayhem and disorder that SCHOOLS HAD TO BE CLOSED IN FERGUSON TODAY. This is utterly unacceptable behavior. Every day that the schools are closed is one more day of ignorance for the children of the citizens of Ferguson. Shame on them!

Two reporters - one from the Washington Post, the other from Huffington Post - were arrested by SWAT teams inside a McDonald’s, which was ordered closed…why? (It had already been vacated.) And a Missouri state senator was tear-gassed when she was sitting peacefully? What on earth is wrong with the law enforcement over there? All of these events have been tweeted and re-tweeted by major media outlets, so St. Louis law enforcement really has some explaining to do. It is finally getting major media coverage Thursday and into Friday.

By “they,” do you mean Reddit? That’s what happened in the aftermath of the Boston marathon bombing - users on Reddit kept naming the wrong guys.

Well, happy that I just heard it on the news here!! What was surprising, the police there said they are going to release the name of the officer to the group asking for it, it is the right thing to do, but I cant believe they agreed to do it, as its a death sentence for that cop, but Im guessing they have no other choice at this point.

The media has zero responsibility here. The problem of race is one that is ugly and then we get mad when someone shows it to us. 🤷

These riots are not about a shooting, they are about an underlying simmering war. A war of poverty and crime, of guilt and anger, of education and ignorance. On both sides. And it, like most other things that are going on right now, will only get worse before it gets better.

The media is not the driver here.
