Where do you draw the line with media that contains profanity? Do you avoid any shows/games/movies/etc. that swear and blaspheme a lot (the Grand Theft Auto series comes to mind)? Or do you ignore it if the swearing and/or blasphemy is at a low level (like in the ‘Uncharted’ game series or Lifetime movies, where swearing and blasphemy are usually expressions of surprise).

I try to avoid them as best can…sometimes you don’t know until you’re really into the movie. I fail to see where the swearing ever adds or enhances the program in any way.
It’s very annoying. Enough already.

I would say it is best to avoid them. Would you knowingly consume contaminated food? Why pollute your brain with that filth? I have turned things off or stopped reading books that contained such garbage, it is unnecessary.

If you read the ratings, they will tip you off on whether there is profanity, swearing, whatever…for the most part, most media has ratings. I have developed a sixth sense for whether something is trash or not without reading ratings but there are clues: the magazine, the publisher, the network, the production company…Some have a very clear stamp of “Trash” or “Sick agendas”. Seek the good stuff. Ask around. CAF has some good threads on books, movies, etc.

🤷

It doesn’t particularly bother me until it becomes excessive. Saying something unfortunate because the world is ending doesn’t bother me. Doing it for absolutely no reason does.

I generally don’t have to worry about it, though, since most of the stories with excessive vulgarity don’t interest me for other reasons. Like, I wouldn’t play GTA in the first place because of the violence.

you should check the catholicnews site about movie reviews, you could get some good tips abut how to do it. you’ll see even they allow some profanity before making it morally offensive.

Had to think about the question several times before posting, because profanity in the media does bother me. I guess I’ve just gradually gravitated toward shows that don’t use it (I’m not much of a movie person; perhaps that’s why, since it’s getting more and more difficult to find “clean” movies… or maybe it’s a lack of attention span, lol… but I digress.)

One big reason I do like “Duck Dynasty” is because it’s funny without using profanity. The cooking and DIY-type channels also appeal to me because they are (mostly) “clean”, and there’s also the mental stimulation of learning about something, be it construction, cooking, or whatever.

Can’t speak to the games, not knowing much about them. I don’t have a gaming console; the sort of games I play are more the Jewel Quest or Tetris type.

Hope that helps a little?
