I deal with this quite simply…God gifts us and Mary wraps it! No different than a working man’s family who brings home the money to buy the gifts, the mother buys the gift and then wraps it. Or if you want, the father buys the gift and she wraps! To me that is how I see it…it passes from the hand of the father into the hands of the mother!

On the topic of whether or not grace flows through our parents made by DavidB. . .

In his instruction to the early Christians, St. Peter teaches:

“As generous distributors of God’s manifold grace, put your gifts at the service of one another, each in the measure he has receieved.” (1 Peter 4:10)

If you mother or father are Christians, born again into the family of God through Jesus Christ, then it is very clear from Scripture that indeed grace should flow from them. They should be “generous distributors of God’s manifold grace.”

This is how Catholics understand the Blessed Mother’s role, too. She is a generous distributor (mediator) of God’s manifold grace. She, being the mother of the Lord, whom God chose from all eternity to bring the Son into this world, certainly recieves a considerable measure of grace to distribute–wouldn’t you say?

Mary distributing all the graces… is it necessary to believe that or is that like Fatima or Lourdes - when Mary appeared… something that many others believe, but you don’t have to believe if you don’t want to?

I think I’m understanding this a little better. The only problem I have is that what might be fitting, proper, or logical may not be reality. I seriously question the “fitting” logic. Does this doctrine have to be believed by all Catholics?

Todd Easton:
Jesus said that those who were entrusted in this life with little things and who proved faithful would be entrusted with even greater things in the life to come. (See Matthew 19:27-29; 25:14-30) Mary was entrusted in life with bringing the Savior into the world and she proved faithful. Because of Mary’s faithfulness, Jesus was able to be born, be raised, and in time to redeem mankind by his death. No Mary, no Jesus; no Jesus, no redemption. What more fitting reward for Mary’s faithfulness in this life, which led to the redemption of all mankind, than for Mary to be entrusted with mediating all graces in the next?

Scripture describes Mary as the mother of Christians (John 19:26-27; Revelation 12:1-17). A mother takes care of (mediates) all her infant’s needs.
I have a problem with this because it kind of places Mary as a judge of our salvation in a way. I kind of agree with Mike, it seems like St. Maximillian went overboard a little. To say that Mary is given graces that she can distrubute as she wills is the same as saying she can decide to give me grace but decide to not give you grace.

I have to agree with Dave and say that this smacks of heresy. We don’t pray to Mary because she can give us what she has, we pray that she can obtain for us the divine grace which only God possesses. The Hail Mary says, “Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.” It doesn’t say give us grace, only God can give us grace. But she can pray that we may recieve grace.

Just because it is doctrine does not make it necessary to believe.

  1. Since Mary’s Assumption into Heaven no grace is conferred on man without her actual intercessory co-operation. (Sent. pia et probabilis.)

  1. Theological opinions of lesser grades of certainty are called probable, more probable, well-founded (sententia probabilis, probabilior, bene fundata). Those which are regarded as being in agreement with the consciousness of Faith of the Church are called pious opinions (sententia pia). The least degree of certainty is possessed by the tolerated opinion (opimo tolerata), which is only weakly founded, but which is tolerated by the Church.

It is a theological opinion.

Please do not give out this website any more. This is a webiste of an heretical preist who has been sanctioned by Rome and by Archbishop Lipscomb (Alabama). He no longer has his faculties. I have corresponded with this priest and swore that I waould warn everyone I could about him. He called our bleoved JPII a murderer! There are awful things on his site. I even talked directly with the Archbishop about him!
This site will only serve to confuse many people who are looking for truth and they will not find truth here!

Mediatrix? I do know what the Word of God says.1 Timothy2;5. For there is ONE GOD and ONE MEDIATOR between GOD and men,the man JESUS CHRIST. God Bless

I have no idea who the guy is or what his theological views are. If you can find another link to the writings of Ludwig Ott, then I will be glad to link to that instead.

Toward the end of the First World War, Pope Benedict XV heart-broken at the continuing struggle, wrote to Cardinal Gasparri concerning prayers for peace to be offered through Mary. In this letter he said:[16](javascript:OpenNote(235,0,16)😉

… all the graces which the Author of all good desires to grant to the poor children of Adam are dispensed by the hands of the most holy Virgin, for such is the loving decree of Divine Providence.

Well, remember that Paul wrote that right after telling believers to be intercessors (mediators, if you will).

1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone…5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus*

All that Mary does is act as an intercessor, she mediates our needs to her Son.

That said, I do not like the “mediatrix of all grace” title. I don’t see it in Scripture nor in the writtings of the Early Church Fathers.

Yes ,We are called to be intercessors and our prayers do come into the throne room where the Holy Angels gather them and present them to Christ who inturn presents them to the Father. Jesus said; No one can come to the Father BUT though Me. 😉 God Bless

That’s right–so if we ask Mary to pray for us, her prayers are taken up as well and presented before the Father, who blesses them.

All our prayers are taken up and presented to Jesus. For He alone is the Mediator.God Bless

Something about this bothers me. I have tremendous faith in Mary and the power of her intercession, but the notion that she dispenses all graces seems far fetched to me. For example, if she dispenses all graces did she give grace to Abraham? In which case, she would have to have existed before she was born. This would make her like God, a complete heresy. If you argue she assumed her grace giving role after her death, it seems weird to me that God would decide to allow Mary, though she is very Holy, to take over his job as grace giver. It seems to contradict the idea of Mary as an intercessor. Maybe I’m wrong, but I just have trouble with this one.

It is still a theological opinion. Four popes have spoken and referenced it. That does not make it dogma.

I have a problem with this article portraying it as a necessity that we pray to Mary. As if Mary is necessary for salvation. Yes Christ came through Mary and she is necessary in that way, but to imply that me not praying to Mary results in me going to hell is going too far.

Ludwig Otts book was a pretty official book and is accepted by the bishops. It says that it is a theological opinion that all grace proceeds through the hands of Mary. I am pretty sure this book has both a “Nihil Obstat” and an “Imprimatur”.
