Ok,

I know that the Moral Theology forum is more sexuality-oriented but at the same time I am asking a question about ethics issues so I thought I’d ask it here.

have you seen those medical billing ads? they talk about “online” medical careers and all that.

given the issue of ethics in the healthcare field today for Catholics, can one run into the risk of sin, even if it is an “Administrative Assistant” for something in the medical field?

(I keep thinking of things like birth control and abortion and what not)

I kind of thought that it was more important for actual doctors and surgeons and maybe nurses and pharmacists. I don’t know.

sorry if I’m barking up the wrong tree. lol.

(I know you may say I’m running into the risk of sin wherever I go - yes that may be true but it may be harder for people like pharmacists than for, say, a librarian - but what if the librarian is asked by a patron to help find a book that you know would lead them to sin? ugh)

The closer you are to the sin itself the more serious and grave the sin is. If you directly participate in an abortion for example the doctor who performs it is not responsible for the same degree of sinfulness as the insurance biller. I think that is what you are getting at. In some cases a little further out from the sin is still a serious sin.For example voting for a candidate because they will expand abortion laws would be formal cooperation. Recently the Pope wrote-
“A Catholic would be guilty of formal cooperation in evil, and so unworthy to present himself for Holy Communion if he were to deliberately vote for a candidate precisely because of the candidate’s permissive stand on abortion and/or euthanasia.”

You want to look into formal , material and remote cooperation with evil. Sorry I can’t find a direct link at the moment. I found this-

If in your job you do not intend to promote or facilitate the comission or ommission of an evil act, you’re on pretty safe moral ground. One cannot be surprised by one’s own sin because one must intend the evil beforehand. Once you have a particular job in mind, pray and seek informed counsel from your confessor.

Peace,
O’Malley

O’Malley you have a point but Seatuck’s statement is making me think now  (Seatuck that’s an excellent link BTW)

I may not be purposefully intending or promoting the sin, but I would be aware of the possible sins and “willfullly” participate and that is officially worrying me now

I would think that billing would fall under "remote material cooperation " and would be acceptable for a catholic to undertake. But you could check with a priest.

Here’s another article-

Hi. First I want to say that I used to be a regular participant on this forum, but have been just lurking for awhile. Right now I happen to have a free moment, and this caught my eye.

Wouldn’t the medical billing and coding taking place AFTER the treatment? So, if you billed or coded for birth control or an abortion, you’d in no way be responsible for it. Wouldn’t it just be like writing a news article (hard news, not an editorial) that mentioned something immoral? Or am I completely wrong about what medical billing and coding actually is?

In Christ,

Ellen

Helping to facillitate payment for these medical procedures and so on can be seen perpetuating the assistance and support for abortion, sterilizations or birth control devices etc. However the participation is remote.

It may be remote but it kind of obliterates any desire on my part to look into it now :o A family member of mine is prodding me to look into it but I can’t really tell him about my reservations because he isn’t as concerned about ethics as I am and it would cause a fight.
