OK (more devil’s advocate)…so you have now been notified that your wife is having an elective abortion or an elective sterilization…now what, what do you do?
Oh, dear God. I don’t know. Legally, I have no say in the matter. No court in the land would help me help my unborn child, so if her mind was made up, I would just have to sit back and watch my child die.

Hi Karin…again,

Thanks for posting the cases.

Now, I just want to mention that I’m a Catholic, sacramentally married in the Catholic Church to another Catholic. Our religion isn’t ‘a little bit of everything’, so we’re required to respect life and God’s plan. When we married, we gave each other exclusive and total right to our own bodies. In other words, my body doesn’t belong to me at all, but to her. Likewise, her body is mine, totally and without reservation.

I understand that in today’s secular world, that is a concept that is very hard to grasp, but it is ingrained in us, and seems completely normal. The ‘it’s my body’ thing seems foreign to me. I would like to have the same rights as the ‘it’s my body’ secularists do.
So why is this an issue for Catholics?? Not being Catholic I do not understand why Catholics are having IVF, practicing ABC and other things…these all go against church teachings etc. It sounds like you & your wife practice what is taught in the Church but why is not every Catholic held to this standard?

All Catholics ARE held to that standard…I guess it’s just that ‘free-will’ thing. None of us are perfect and we’re all sinners.

Could it be not free will per say but a **lack **of being rooted in the faith that makes people do these things? Or a lack of teaching???

Hi Karin,

Let me add that if my wife DID do this, she wouldn’t be of sound mind, so as hard as it would be to do, I’d have to forgive her. And I’d pray for her and for my dead child.

Now, I probably would do whatever I could to stop her, if I had the opportunity. I can’t say I would do, but I would use whatever non-violent means I had at my disposal. I would never hurt her, but I would have no trouble spending a little time in the brig if I could save my child’s life.
