Medical marijuana recommendation

I have had chronic back pain for the last 3 years. With multiple issues diagnosed with my back, the doctor has assured me it’ll probably only get worse. However, over time and prayer it has improved somewhat, thanks be to God. My chronic pain at average is moderate with flare ups that can be quite severe. I do not want surgery and I do not care to take the narcotics (vicodin, morphine) that are often prescribed.

Is there anything immoral about getting a marijuana recommendation and using marijuana for medicinal purposes? I assume I would be in a much more comfortable state using that as medicine when needed, but any advice, wisdom or opinions are welcome.

If its for medical use, on medical advice, in a state where it is legal, I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it if you can obtain it in a way that does not feed the criminal supply chain.

The catechism says the following:

2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

2291 The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Their use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense. Clandestine production of and trafficking in drugs are scandalous practices. They constitute direct co-operation in evil, since they encourage people to practices gravely contrary to the moral law.

I have some knowledge of opioid medications and agree that they can be bad medicine. And I have chronic back pain–although not particularly severe.

I had spoken with a top researcher from a pharmaceutical company that manufactures opioid medications. She said although opioids are regularly prescribed for back pain they are not particularly effective and she does not recommend them.

As for medical mj, if it works and it’s legal, go for it.

It really depends on what kind of pain a person has whether opiates are effective or not, I have been taking them for over 12 yrs now, and found the stronger ones do take away a good bit of my pain, but when I had a major toothache, the same opiates did absolutely nothing for that pain.

Really, the use of opiates to treat pain has been the general bread and butter for the pharma industry, its much more profitable to ‘treat’ pain then to cure it, opiate pain meds are crazy cheap to produce and they keep the patient coming back month after month, for decades.

Marijuana is a different story though, anyone, anywhere can grow and use this, thats not a good thing for the pharma industry, I would imagine they are part of the fight to keep pot illegal across the board for this very reason, to ensure they have a lock on the market.
