The reading today I think is a plan for life and with a promise and one by God. The Psalm goes on to speak about the fruit of such a life and Jesus in the Gospel ratifies this: "But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” …or “by their fruits you will know them”. The Gospel also I think points out that it can be almost to actually impossible to please everyone and that our motives can indeed be misinterpreted…known in spiritual terminology as a “humiliation and a cross”. There is a balance needed in spirituality I think, however, that only The Holy Spirit can grant, as sometimes for some reason we may need to speak up for ourselves, as indeed Jesus is doing in this Gospel.
I though the meditation today was really excellent and important and is really about detachment - about not owning anything in our lives whatsoever rather to realize and with joy that they are God’s to do with as He wishes - and even our spiritual goods.
Sometimes I can read a mediation and thing “oh yeah, well ok” and at other times it can really strike me in some way. This is simply a “dance step” in the dance of life as the meditation points out.

Portion from the First Reading: If you would hearken to my commandments,
your prosperity would be like a river,
and your vindication like the waves of the sea;
From Gospel:
"But wisdom is vindicated by her works.”

“I, the Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good,” proclaims the prophet, “and lead you on the way you should go.” Then he adds wistfully, “If [only] you would hearken to my commandments” (Isaiah 48:17-18).

We can see the same kind of wishful sadness in Jesus’ description of the way people had reacted to John the Baptist and himself. Like children who find an excuse to stand back from any game their playmates propose, many of the people of Israel refused to mourn with John the Baptist, or feast with Jesus. Perhaps some of them had adopted John’s austerity as a way of atoning for their sins. This was a legitimate response to God, but they got stuck there and began criticizing Jesus for his apparent disregard for penance. As a result, they turned a deaf ear to his kingdom message.
The truth is, the Holy Spirit promises to lead us moment by moment, but he does not promise to lead us in the same way all the time. Often we miss the new thing God is doing today because we are so impressed with what he did yesterday. Corporate worship used to be so powerful; how can he be nudging me now to spend time in silent prayer? I loved teaching small children; how could I step out of my comfort zone and work with adults searching for faith?
A good dance partner must make many accommodations. Sometimes the music speeds up or slows down, and she must follow her escort’s lead into a different dance step. Sometimes the dance floor gets crowded, and he must maneuver them out of a tight spot. Sometimes he will delight her with a dip or turn, or guide her toward the punchbowl for some refreshment. It’s never the exact same dance twice in a row.
On the dance floor of life, there are times for us to settle down and get serious—and there are times when we should lighten up and take a break. There are times for spontaneity and times for discipline and fidelity to routines. There are times to savor the moment and times to move on to something new.
Let’s be attentive to the Holy Spirit and invite him to lead us step by step. “Holy Spirit, I surrender my desire to lead. Open my heart and eyes so that I can dance at your pace.”

I woke up this morning at 4:30am and discouraged, decided that I am making a 30 foot “don’t _____ with me zone”. My wife woke up and as we had coffee, I explained this to her as she just rolled her eyes. Jokingly, I said “don’t make me remove you from my zone”. Since I started to follow Christ, I have allowed trespassers in my “zone”. As a soldier assigned to an airborne Ranger unit, I never allowed anyone within my “zone” to step on my toes. I would remove them promptly. I would have never asked anyone about my life on the internet, no matter how smart they thought they where. I made my own way. Now that I find I can’t beat the pulp out of someone who disagree’s with me because Christ doesn’t approve of this, I have to relearn to operate in this world as a christian. But today I’m taking off and declaring a zone around me. I don’t know how this relates to this thread, but it does somehow! I’ll be at the punch bowl.🙂

Hi Tim…Smiling as I read your post - I too can reach that point where I have a safety zone around myself and woe betied any trespasses. You mentioned that you dont know how putting safety zones around yourself can realate to this thread. Perhaps it relates to the meditation and The Holy Spirit leading us in different ways at different times and also my comment re balance which only The Holy Spirit can effect:

Drawing from my own personal experience and myself, I too need to relearn how to be a good Catholic Christian and this relearning process I think goes on for the whole of life. We remain totally human and sometimes for some reason it may be necessary to protect ourselves with nerves stretched to breaking point for some reason and it is ok to put a safety zone around oneself until nerves and stress settle. In other words at one time The Holy Spirit will lead us to renew and renew our efforts to be a better person and Catholic … and then at another time, nerves and stress at maximum He leads us to act in self protection. The meditation also points out that we should not cling to any one thing and not even spiritual goods, we should be sensitive for the Holy Spirit to lead us differently.
To need to put a safety zone around ourselves with dire warning signs re any trespasses is certainly not the ideal…but it is a very human type of necessity from time to time. It is the best we can do and I hold to the fact that The Lord understands our human weaknesses…after all at times he tried to get away from the crowds that pressed on him while at other times he was in their absolute midst and talking to them as in today’s Gospel. Jesus as he speaks is “surrounded by the crowd”.
The thing about my weaknesses and faults is always firstly that I can see them and acknowledge them for weaknesses and faults and rather than distress over them, I ask God to help me to overcome them for I am helpless to do so without Him. Nothing like weaknesses and faults to keep one close to humble and hence “Oh happy fault” …
Sometimes safety zones around oneself not only protects oneself but is an act in protection and care and love of others…trying to protect them from our own lousy mood. Hence though not the ideal for sure, it can be an act of loving Charity in a less than ideal situation and that is that stress and nerves are screaming.

Blessings Tim - Barbhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_144_6.gif…and thank you for your Post
