I was wondering if any of the local buddhists on board here might be able to share some tips on this meditation… i have been told by many that this form of meditation will cure any practioner with an angry disposition and create a more amable relationship with others.

I’m not sure but I think you have to learn what is known as “calm abiding” first. Otherwise you won’t have enough concentration.

I wouldn’t say it is able to “cure any practitioner with an angry disposition”, but it certainly will provide some insight on the mechanics of one’s anger. Meditation itself is simply a technique; real cure comes from a much deeper level of being. Having said that, if you do practice metta, you should definitely feel free to modify it, and shape it in such a way that you actually learn from it. No need to sit still for 30 minutes; you can do metta-meditation while walking to the bus-stop, or shopping for groceries, or swimming with the sharks off the coast of Zanzibar.

As far as improving relationships, metta-meditation can help with that, but you would have to also engage in direct, inter-personal actions. Metta-meditation’s essential purpose centers upon one’s own awareness, rather than inter-personal skills.
