Before I explored my faith, i use to meditate…i believe it was in a zen technique…either way, i believed it to be a tool to increase my focus. Anyway, i’m off topic… I was wondering if anyone knew of online audio files with catholic guided mediation? A friend gave me a cassette tape with a guided mediation on it awhile ago and i found it quite relaxing and inspiring.

Thanks

I’m not aware of any audio meditations online, but there are some wonderful printed meditations in the book Introduction to the Devout Life which was written in the early 1600s by Saint Francis de Sales. It is available online at ccel.org/ccel/desales/devout_life.toc.html .

Introduction to the Devout Life is an excellent book, a wonderful manual on how to live the Christian life, and just as relevant today as it was 400 years ago when it was written. If I were stranded on a desert island and could only have three spiritual books with me, this would definitely be one of them! I would recommend getting your own copy.

But as for the online edition mentioned above, the meditations themselves are in Part I, Chapters IX-XVIII. They are not meant to be simply read, but rather to help you lift your mind and heart to God. If you are new at Christian meditation (which is Christ-centered and thus very different from Zen), scroll down the page to the chapters where Saint Francis gives a “how-to” on meditation. They are found in Part II, Chapters I-IX.

I suppose there are meditation tapes and I have seen some advertised, but it might be easier to get out of the habit of relying on such an aid. lectio divina is the classic Christian means of meditating on God’s word. Prepare the material, time and place. Pray to the Holy Spirit for Light. Read the chosen passage slowly all the way through. Pause. Read the passage again, more slowly, almost word. . . by . … word. Stop at any word or phrase that speaks to you, read it several times. stop. think about it. ruminate about it. ask yourself–what do I hear, what do I feel, what do I sense. Move on when the phrase no longer speaks. continue in this manner until the end of the passage. stop. just think of the words. You may wish to right the actual word or phrase that spoke to you, in your journal, and to note the feelings, emotions, or how it spoke to you. this is optional.

read the passage again all the way through. Pray from the feelings and the resonance of the Word you experienced.

now the meditation begins. close your eyes and simply listen in silence and peace. remain with the word, simply listening in silence for a reasonable period of time, probably not less than 10 minutes, and usually not more than 30 minutes. God may or may not, at His pleasure, lead to you a state of deeper contemplation. Do not seek it or ask for it, but simply be there if it happens. End with a
