Meditative Music for Time of Prayer

Hello:

I would like to find some good meditative music to enhance prayer time rather than distract from it. For me, this probably means very few words if any. I’d love to hear your recommendations…especially if there are mp3s to be found on the web.

i love yo yo ma’s 2 disk recording of bach’s suites for unaccompanied cello. musically speaking, they’re the toppest of top notch; meditatively, they’re that perfect combination of tonal simplicity and melodic complexity that seems to really open my heart.

(spacey robot voice): i’d do a commercial for them, and they wouldn’t even have to pay me… 😃
 
I got a CD in the mail with chants on it by Benedictine monks. It is absolutley beautiful!!! I play it while in prayer. Whether I’m praying the rosary, LOTH, or anything. Its very relaxing.

I like the Simplicity series of instrumental hymns on various instruments, strings, brass, woodwinds etc. I also like the piano albums by Steve Hall, On Eagles wings was the first he has a new one.
 
I love my Passion of the Christ soundtrack for that. I also listen to John Michael Talbot and Fr. Stan Fortuna. It’s a nice way of settling down, especially for a rosary. I also like Gretchen Harris
 
I would rather use chant for the specific office it is for, such as Advent, Christmas, Easter etc., as I am trying to collect a chant library for LOTH. There is a new version of morning and evening prayer for mp3 but it is pricy but I still might get it. for reciting the prayers on my own or meditation, I prefer instrumental, not singing or chant. for extended meditation or contemplation I prefer silence, but will play some background instrumental music of the house is noisy.

I got it for free in the mail, Its called Saint Benedict and is performed by the Monastic Choir of the Abbey of Notre-Dame of Fontgombault

This is an awesome CD and I got it free in the mail too! I’ve also gotten an Easter CD from the same abbey, I wonder what list they get our names from…? hmmm…:hmmm:
 
For me, the absolute BEST thing is The Chaplet of Divine Mercy in song. EWTN broadcasts this at 3pm most days. It is positively beautiful - chills up your spine because it’s so wonderful. They sell it on DVD and CD as well. I always use that to get me in a very prayerful, contemplative mood. It’s so wonderful to pray the chaplet (or sing your heart out to it) and then go to the Lord with your petitions.
 
From a very personal point of view, almost everything of Mozart is fit for the purpose.
But it would be silly for my part to deny, for a mere matter of personal taste, Bach’s effectiveness.
 
I recomend Vivaldis ‘four seasons’. I sometimes listen to them when I pray-it helps a LOT.

thi site looks great! I just have a couple of questions, how does it work? Is it legal?

I might visit it more often since I’m hoping to build up a collection of songs for meditation.

Thank you. The music is published under a “Creative Commons” License. That means you can do anything you want with it – including make copies and re-publish them elsewhere – as long as you don’t charge any money for it.
