Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

The meek. Not the meek and the proud and the belligerent and the crusaders. Just the meek.

It’s hard to be meek. Really hard.

What’s the opposite of meekness? Combativeness. Which on a verbal level is argumentativeness.

Eagerness to demonstrate that another is wrong, is argumentativeness. Even if the other really is wrong.

Wittiness is a form of argumentativeness. Sarcasm is. Patrolling threads for aberrant views is.

Does an online forum invite argumentativeness? It seems that way. (Note to self: read more, post less.)

Is competition compatible with meekness? It seems not.

Is our society compatible with it?

Christ really wants us to be meek for He set that example Himself and He said, “learn of Me for I am meek and humble of heart.”
It is a really important virtue, and one I really need to work on. 😉

‘Faced with their rage, be meek; faced with their arrogance, be humble’ - St Ignatius of Antioch

Isn’t there a scripture saying Moses was the meekness man ever ?

I forgot Jesus said, “ I am meek, learn of me “

I suppose martyrs were meek - in the face of combativeness!

Every virtue is forgotten. For real I never see any one practice them. Even in CAF it is hard to find it. Or maybe I have a high standard.

Just to be clear, we’re not called to be floor mat pacifists or give up our right to self defense. I’m not besmirching martyrs but I could never have been led into an arena for spectator driven carnage. 😑

True meekness is not civility. It is not the willingness or ability to say: “Let’s talk things over instead of resorting to violence.” The civilized man is not meek; he has only learned to comply with some society’s rules as to what forms and levels of attack and defense are acceptable, and which aren’t.

True meekness is something deeper. It is an innocence; it is almost an inability to understand attack, or at least a strong reluctance to recognize it.

Once one has lost true meekness, it is very difficult to recover it. One must go beyond, way beyond meeting modern society’s standards of reasonableness, fairness, etc. One must become an “id*ot” again, somewhat in Dostoyevski’s sense of that word. One must become afraid of the impulse of defending oneself – for whoever defends has recognized attack, and has therefore already been affected by it.

The Sealed Castle needs no archers.

Sometimes you have to defend yourself. There are times to be assertive and times to be passive.
