Howdy all. First post here, been a long-time lurker. I was wondering if any college folks or recent college grads (or anyone, really) could answer a question that’s been nagging me for awhile. How does one go about finding Catholic girls on a college campus?

I’ve dated non-Catholic and non-practicing Catholics before, and it just wasn’t spiritually fulfilling and there was often a ton of judgement (hence why those folks are exes now). I could date a few girls here but I’d rather narrow it down to finding some practicing Catholic girls, but I have literally no idea how to find girls like that. I’d go to Newman but the Newman Association here on campus is really ecumenical (and I have many, many problems with their philosophical and theological points of view since they’re somewhat off-the-beaten-path of Catholicism - but this is a separate discussion for a separate time) so I don’t really have any interest in spending time in those circles - even if I did I’d likely end up with a girl who goes to Mass but disagrees with me on many theological issues.

Any (name removed by moderator)ut on this?

Are there any nearby churches with a singles group? Also, try the pro-life club on campus; though there may be many individuals who are not Catholic, I would assume you have a better chance finding a Catholic at a pro-life meeting.

I’d still give the Newman Center a try.

As somebody mentioned, pro-life groups are very good. And the female membership looooves babies.

There are certain departments that are an especially good gamble (depending on your area and the kind of college it is)–classics is a good one, as is philosophy (particularly at religious colleges). People who study medieval stuff are often Catholic. So if there’s a talk on campus on some sort of medieval figure or other Catholicky subject, get yourself over there and stick around for the grapes and cheese cubes–you might even be able to form a group to go out to dinner if the conversation is good enough. Law also attracts a lot of Catholics, but if you’re an undergraduate, dating a female law student might not be feasible. I’ve also known a number of Catholic nursing students.

If you have one in your area, a TLM community can be a real community. That’s not our thing, but I know that there are a lot of college people who are deeply involved in the local TLM community.

the nearest Fraternity/Sorority parties… I’m sorry. :o was true when I was in college in the late 70s early 80s.

Practice saying this, “You like Hildegard of Bingen! I LOVE Hildegard of Bingen!!!”

At Catholic colleges, there are often interesting conferences that bring all sorts of people out of the woodwork. I remember once being at one at Notre Dame that was about art and religion and walking by a group of young people talking animatedly about how somebody they knew had translated the Hail Mary into Elvish.

There is such a thing as the Catholic nerd.

Keep your eyes peeled and don’t dismiss certain venues out of hand for being too “liberal.” If you keep moving and circulating, you’ll make some interesting discoveries.

I think something similar might actually be a good idea. I know when I was young, “catholic” events were actually bad place to meet a bf/gf. Leaders would always remind the men that the women who go to these events are not going to these to be hit on. Some went so far as to make you promise not to date other members/participants. It was and is a faux pas to ask out a girl you met at these events.

I think what you should do OP just join clubs and groups that are relevant to your interests. Catholics are a around 25% of America, so there is bound to be some Catholic girls in them just by statistics.

Also don’t be dismissing college parties or bars. I know we tend to think that those things are drunken carousals, but most of the time they are calm socials. In my experience it usually not appropriate to flirt with a girl at a religious event, but it’s always okay to flirt with girls at parties. 😉

Believe me, I love the bar and party scene as much as the next guy, but I was aiming to find something/ someone a little different. I figure that’s solid advice - I’ll just keep on plugging and have faith that I’ll end up with someone as appreciative and strong about the Catholic faith as I!
