Meeting Sunday Obligation

Can you tell me if there are any written rules concerning when a person has to be at mass to fulfill his Sunday obligation? Our pastor said that you have to be there for the opening song for the mass to count. I have heard other times like being to mass before the offeratory but have never seen anything in writing. Some times things come up and even though a person might always intend to be at mass ahead of time they might run late for any number of reason: kids, traffic, etc. Thanks for your help.
