If all goes well I’ll be meeting with a Spiritual Director next week. I’m already nervous- well, maybe anxious would be a better word to use here 😉

I explained when we were talking via email that I dont even really understand what a Spiritual Director actualy is- thats fine and normal apparently.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this meeting? How should I introduce myself? What should I wear (I’m meeting with him right after school on a casual/non-uniform day)? Should I bring anything? Ok, I’m am a bit nervous, and I want to make a good first impression. Maybe I need to practice my latin prayers beforehand? Read the Bible and the Catechism so I dont look dumb might help too.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated 😃

Be honest be at peace and be yourself. Yes bring the Holy Ghost with you. Ask for help. They are great to talk to and to help your discernment. I met with one and it went great and also I learned a lot about myself and what I am going through. My advice anyway. God bless Scoob.

AMEN!

Just ask Jesus, his Mother, and St. Jospeh (one or all three) to make it easy. Jesus will do just that!

This is a true story, a Sister/Nun got on a plane and was really tired after a long conference she had been a speaker at. She sat down and told the Lord, ‘now Lord I am just really tired, I don’t feel like talking, or spending time with anyone, but, if you want me to do something for you, just make it easy.’

So she sat there and the seat next to her remained empty. Just before closing the door a man got on and sat beside her. She just quietly grined at him.

After take off, the man reached for his brief case, opening it, he took out a brand new Bible. He sat there with it on top of his case tapping on it. Finally, looking over at sister (at that time they still wore habits) he said to her, ‘Sister do you know anything about this? My wife gave it to me, and I have no idea of what to do with it. Will you tell me about it, and what to do?’

So she sat there momentarily saying, ‘ok Lord, I ask you to make this easy.’ You know what, He did. Jesus not only had her teaching the person he sent to her for help, but the guy in the seat next to him, the people in front turned around backwards to listen to her, the people behind them were standing up as much as possible and leaning over, the folks in all three rows to the side of them were leaning over listening to what she had to say.

Now didn’t Jesus make that easy for her? 😃 He will do the same for you, for all of us, if we just ask.👍

Relax, take a deep breath and pray. I also experienced that on my first meeting.

Every person is different, thus I don’t know about your spiritual director and can’t assume anything.

for my first meeting, I wore simple and clean clothes and honest about myself. I think I sounded quite dumb, coz so many things I didn’t know, especially about bible. But my SD is nice and understand me quite well.

How often are you going to meet your SD?

Just go as you are. If you are in a state of confusion on terms of your vocation just show that you are. There is no need to put on a mask. If you have questions or are not sure of something, just ask and clarify. There’s really no need to display how knowledgable you are. Your SD is not gonna ask you to recite the whole of CCC#2725, recite the whole of Psalm 118 or recite the whole of the Te Deum in Latin before you start. 🙂 You’re not having an examination on your Catholic Knowledge.

When I met my SD, I was in smart casual attire, since I knew there was an Oratory where the Opus Dei priests stay. I’ll be meeting him this Saturday.

The only preparation that you need beforehand is identifying what you am not sure of and preparing the questions that you want to ask.

Sancta Maria Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis.

I was also nervous when I first met my spiritual director. It is normal to feel a little bit nervous because you don’t know what to expect.

But relax, just be yourself. The purpose of meeting with a spiritual director is to help yourself better discern God’s call in your life and advance your walk with the Lord. So be truthful, honest and open are important.

The first meeting is probably just get to know each other.
From then on, it will be good to reflect what you want to discuss before the meeting, and go from there.

It is great to have a spiritual director.
God bless!

Good advice. Its not an exam your going for. Its natural to feel a bit nervous. First meetings are general just getting to know each other, so i would imagin it will general type questions…

thanks for the thread, I am meeting somewhat soon with mine and had the same thoughts/worries.

Can we back up for those of us (or maybe just me) who don’t know…how do you go about getting a spiritual director?

Usually, it’s the person you’re comfortable to talk to and have a deep understanding & knowledge about the faith. Nowadays, it’s more common to have priests, religious brothers/sisters as Spiritual Director (SD).

If you’re interested in joining Religious Life, you may want to get your SD from the order. It is because you’ll learn more about the Order in your discernment. How to get to know them? Contact them. Parish priest is also another option.

Hope it helps. =)

We had to put off the meeting for a while because he was booked solid- but I got an email today that he is available for a short period tomorrow afternoon, so I’ll be meeting him right after to school.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! That is exciting!!
Most part of spiritual direction is actually spiritual companion.
On our spiritual journey, a spiritual director accompanies and guides us. He will listen more than talk. If things work out, what I mean is, as time goes by, if trust and friendship could be built, it will be a very helpful and significant relationship.

God bless!

You have to be totally honest with your SD or it wont work, so first impression or not, he will soon be knowing the “real” you. 👍

Just relax and take it easy, he is there to help you.

Peace and God Bless.

The meeting went well. We were only able to get aquainted, but I’ve booked a meeting again in a few weeks.

Thats good. Glad it went well. Most first meetings are about just getting acquainted.
