Megachurch pastor and Evangelism Explosion founder D. James Kennedy was no history buff

Last night as I flipped through the channels, I came across the late Presbyterian pastor D. James Kennedy giving a sermon on John Calvin. Nonetheless, it caught my attention and heard his sermon on Calvin. D.James Kennedy said John questioned the RCC on how saints are mediators between man and God. Mr. Kennedy goes on to say that the Bible does not teach it and Calvin basically had it right. At one point he said John Calvin was at council held by the RCC in regards to some of his teachings. D. James Kennedy went on to say that roughly 100 priests and 80 monks were present.

In addition, according to Mr. Kennedy many of the clergy quoted the early church fathers,but were put to shame by Calvin because he quoted over 300 quoates. Likewise, many of the clergy only knew the names of the works of the ECF and not really their content,which I truly doubt. Anyway, to make the story short, once Calvin had rebuked the council,many of the priests took off their vestments or albs and left the RCC to join the Reformed Church. :ehh:

My first observation was when Mr. Kennedy stated that the Bible does not teach about saints as mediators between man and God. Well my question to him would have been:

And where did the Bible give men like Calvin,Knox,etc to start their own churches?

It never fails to amaze me how these so-called Reformed Christians always attack the RCC while giving sermons? What mindless contradictions from so-called Reformed Christians.

We know where the lies come from, dont we? from satan himself. of course satan doesn t want people to know the Truth and use these people who are not protect by the HS to deceiving many. but they will be accountable to God some day. hopefully they will repent before they die.

But what is sad is those so-called pastors (men of God) literally are lying to large groups of people by preaching distortions. How can anyone go to the lectern/ambo (pulpit) and preach about God and bear false witness against other Christians? That is sick and wrong!

That is how satan works. We dont need to understand just take the Word of God for it. the blind leading the blind, they both will fall into the abyss. Words of Christ. The Bible says how satan waged war against the Church. there is no better way to do it.

remember that satan made Eve and Adam to belief him and disobey God. it is no different today.

I hear you out and it is very true. Quick question for you? Are you Orthodox or Lutheran? Only a question… not trying to be rude. 🙂
 
DJK died in 2007; I had not heard his stuff since 00; prior to that, he had not seemed particularly anti Catholic.

It’s sad to hear that he had boarded the anti Catholic bandwagon. Especially since he definitely knows better now.

I would be interested to know the date and place of the sermon and did Dr. Kennedy state which council to which he was refering? I do not remember off hand any such council, though I do know Calvin did engage in letter writing with Cardinals and other Church officals over theology. Much like Luther.

As to your question, until you answered their argument against saints as mediator your question will not be answered. They will focus on why you can not or will not answer their argument.

Understand Presbyterians do have scripture verses to back what they believe. They believe the Catholic church has misunderstood the gospel and its application to our lives. They hold to Pauls caution in 2 Corn 11 about those who teach or proclaim a gospel different from that delivered by Christ and the Apostles. That would be a section of scripture they would use against Catholics. Also, Reformed Theology does not look at the formations of their churches as starting their own church, but as a revitalization of Christianity that had been oppressed by medieval catholic mysticism and an overly hellenization of theology. For starters. Many see the Roman Catholic Church as a new Church and date its formation at the Council of Trent. Whereas many Baptists would date the Church from Nicea I.

I also do not understand your outrage. You call Reformed Christians “so-called Reformed Christians”. Is this any better than what SOME of them say about Catholics.

We all will be held accountable to God some day, whether Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Christian or non Christian. I pray we all repent before we died, not just those that disagree with us.

Do not be fooled, Satan uses those within the Church to harm the body of Christ. Even Peter had to be rebuke by Christ, Jesus actually called him Satan for his conduct.

I am glad the Catholics I encountered believed in mingling with people of differing beliefs or I would not be a Catholic today.

What do you fear by mingling? That you would be pulled away from the Church?

I beg your pardon? What outrage? I am simply acknowledge the late D.James Kennedy did not present accurate information. That is right, I did not call them “so-called Reformed Christians”…what is the problem?

Read the last paragraph of your original post in this thread. You started this thread. Your last paragraph had the description “these so-called Reformed Christians”. Your claim you did not call them by this description is surprising. It is right there in black and white, saved for all to see. You did it. It was wrong to do.

The problem is a lack of charity in your description.

D. James Kennedy held a doctorate and was an ordained minister. It is inappropriate to refer to him as Mr. Even if we disagree with his theology. Though the Church holds Anlgican orders to be void, the Pope refers to the ArchBishop of Canturbury by his title and does not call him Mr. Williams. We can be respectful to people with which we disagree.

I know what I wrote and have no issues that all can see it. Did I say I wanted to hide it? References to my claim? Easy…the Church Channel on channel 371 on Direct TV. The late pastor said those words,so do not accuse me of presenting false information. He said for all to hear it,so ask the Church Channel.

D.James held a doctorate in what? Theology?

BTW: It was not my intention to be rude,I merely gave my view and if you disagree with it or take offense, I am sorry.
