Does anyone have the Megalynarion of the Theotokos in Byzantine Chant in Western notation? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

The original one written by St. Cosmos the Melodist in the 8th century.

The Megalynarion changes with the Feast or the season of the year. Do you men “More honorable then the cherubim”?

Check out the Melkite horologion, or st. Anthony monasteries website…they have Byzantine and Western notations on there for most of the Liturgical stuff.

As has been mentioned there are many. Perhaps you are thinking of “Axion Esti”?

St Kosmas of Maium is generally held to be the composer of the hymn ‘More honourable than the cherubim…’

The preceding part of the hymn ‘It is truly meet in to bless thee …’ (Axion estin) was first sung at orthros by the Archangel Gabriel (disguised as a monk) before the icon of the Mother of God in the chapel of a kellion of Pantokratoros monastery in Karyes, Mount Athos. The icon is now enthroned in the high place of the Church of the Protaton, Karyes, Mount Athos.

The hymn is sung in any of the eight tones and according to many melodies.

Greetings in the Lord!
There are MANY musical settings for the Megalynarion and I am not sure which melody you are looking for. In the Antiochian Archdiocese website we have an open source for all of our liturgical music, found at antiochian.org/music/library. Many choir directors use this as a resource if they do not have a music library built up. I used it all the time and it has grown in the last several years!
You will find the Megalynarion listed as the Hymn to the Theotokos, and there are many of them. You may have to poke around in the website to figure out how to find things, but you will find the hymns listed under a main heading in the alpha list plus others within individual groups of hymns for specific feasts. Hope that is a clear enough explanation (clear as mud…) Good luck and happy hunting; it’s a long list. bob.c

This is the one I am referring to.
Megalynarion of the Theotokos
Higher than the heavens above are you,
And you are much purer
Than the radiance of the sun;
You who have redeemed us
From the curse which is upon us;
O Mistress of Creation,
In hymns, do we magnify.
From the great multitude of my sins,
Ill am I in body, Ill am I also in my soul;
I am fleeing to you,
The one who is all-blessed,
The hope of all the hopeless,
Please come bring help to me.
Lady and the Mother of Him who saves,
Receive the supplications
Of the wretches who beg of you;
That you may entreat
The One you brought forth;
O Lady of all people, Intercede for us.
Now with zeal we chant this Ode to you;
You, the all praised Lady,
Mother of God , we hymn with joy;
With the choir of saints,
Together with the Baptist,
Beseech, O Theotokos,
That we may find clemency.
Speechless be the lips of impious ones,
Those who do not reverence
Your great icon, the sacred one
Which is called Directress,
And was depicted for us
By one of the apostles,
Luke the Evangelist.
With the hosts of Angels,
The Lord’s Forerunner,
And Apostles, the chosen twelve,
With the saints most holy,
And with you, the God-Bearer,
We seek your intercession
For our deliverance.
