Hi.

Does anyone out there use the Liturgy of the Hours for Benedictine Oblates published by St Meinrad Archabbey.

I was curious how it differes from the standard LOTH published by Catholic Book Publishing.

I have sung the Liturgy of the Hours in a Benedictine monastery many times. The only major difference that I can tell is that the Psalter is scheduled for two weeks in stead of four.

I don’t know the Meindrad LOTH, but generally monastic LOTH differs substantially from the LOTH.

While the structure of the post-Vatican II Roman and monastic offices will be the same (introductory verse, hymn, psalmody, reading, responsory, gospel canticle, intercessions, Lord’s prayer, collect, conclusion, for Lauds and Vespers), the psalm schema will be different:

Schema A: the traditional Benedictine schema of 250+ psalms per week
Schema B: modern psalm schema, 150 psalms per week, or options to divide on 2 weeks
Schema C and D: divided over two weeks.

Plus, each abbot has the authority to set the psalm order for his abbey. That leads to some hybrids schemas. One I have seen is the Office of Readings and Lauds combined into “Matins” and said over 4 weeks, the mid-day Office over 4 weeks, and Vespers using the Monastic antiphonary over 1 week, with compline invariable from day-to-day. Which is the traditional Monastic way of saying Compline.

Beyond that, differences will be the Office of Readings being called “Vigils”, and either said by anticipation the evening before or very early in the morning (often before 6 am), and the monastic calendar instead of the Roman will be used, for the saints. There is also an option in the monastic LOTH, for Lauds and Vespers, to place the hymn after the reading instead of at the start of the Office. That was in fact the practice before the Vatican II reforms.

Thanks for the info.

I did know that there are a lot of differences in the psalter, Matins etc.

But the LOTH for Oblates from Meinrad’s is only 20 dollars so I’m sure that it doesn’t contain the entire office or have Matins in it. I think it’s probably more like Shorter Christian Prayer. I was actually wondering more about the format (text size) etc, the psalms and scripture version used, and how difficult it is to figure out your way around, etc.
