I am sorry, but I do not know how to re-state my question to make it easier to understand. My only intent was to get an answer. An earlier post on this page did answer my question.

This might seem like an odd question, but after the events surrounding Mel Gibson’s life since The Passion came out, how do you feel in regards to his actions in the past year? I believe he is sincere in his repentance and in his faith, but what do you think?

its none of my business. I can only pray for his health, and his family and may God strengthen him through his tests and trials. I believe Mel in revealing the Sorrowful mysteries of the Holy Rosary through the Passion movie, must of pissed off Satan. We should pray for him.

You did ask about what we thought about the sincerity of his repentance. That did lead some to believe that you were asking us to speculate on the state of his soul. After all, sincerity of repentance is part and parcel of the state someone’s soul.

Now, that may not have been your intent, but that was how a few people interpreted it. You did clarify it later, but for some, speculating on a person’s behavior or some type of inner conversion is something we prefer to avoid.

Finally, remember that being judgmental has nothing to do with pointing the errors or sins of another person. Being judgmental is about speculating or making a conclusion about the state of a person’s soul. Accusations of judgmentalism are almost always both pejorative and wrong. Unless someone says you are evil, not what you do, but you yourself, or they say you are going to hell with no hope of redemption, then you can say a person is being judgmental.

If a person says to you, “What you are doing is wrong.” Or if they say, “what you are doing is placing your soul in jeopardy,” that is NOT being judgmental. That is trying to offer correction; something all Christians are called upon to do.

I can understand how frustrating it is when someone misinterprets our intent. Sometimes these forums can seem like meat grinders. I only ask that you extend to those who appear to criticize you what you are asking for. Charity and respect.

I would also echo this request to all the posters here. It is very easy for people to misinterpret a reply and place a it in a negative light. I make this mistake myself from time to time. We all do.

I ask all of us to give each other the benefit of the doubt.

And that would include the illustrious Mr. Gibson.

Thank you very much. Let me just stress that I do not propose to judge/condemn Mel Gibson. I, again, am I huge fan of his who wants to see him supported just like I would like to see that for any person who says they are sorry. I appreciate your kind words.

I think that Mel made a wonderful film when he made The Passion of the Christ. When I saw it, people were visibly (and audibly) weeping in the theatre.
I think he is a very talented actor & director.

I was deeply saddened to hear of his problems, but the truth is (and any alcoholic will surely agree), that alcoholism is never cured; it is simply a question of whether or not an alcoholic is drinking or is sober.
It is a horrible addiction, and I believe that Mel needs our prayers. I do agree with the person who said, that satan mad: whom I refuse the dignity of a capital letter) has no doubt been attacking him. After all, the countless people who have been spiritually moved & inspired by the Passion are grinding on the devil.

We should always pray for those with addictions, especially, surely, our brothers & sisters in Christ.

Well, Kalt, let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Mel Gibson. I admire his guts and his courage to make a movie expressing his personal faith in Christ. In the past year and a half he has experienced a couple problems. He was seen (there are pictures) of him getting drunk and being slightly crazy with lots of younger adults at a bar in L.A. When he left he was pulled over for a D.U.I. When the cop was giving him a sobriety test, he asked if the cop was Jewish (he was, I think), and he went on about how the Jews control things. Now, the press jumped all over this cause his father is a questioner of the Holocaust, and he has strong feelings about the Jews. The press immediately began comparing him to his father.

Well, Mel came out apologizing like crazy, and he was up front about his struggle with alcohol (something he has struggled with for years). He has since been to at least two A.A. meetings a week for the past year, and he has become close to some Jewish groups so that he can learn and grow as a result of his mistakes. I am in now way judging. The larger point that I was trying to get to was how do we as Christians respond to our brothers and sisters when they stumble. I was not condemning him in any way! If anything, I stand by him and the example he has set since the incidents (although I doubt that comment will mean anything to those who have obviously missed the point here, and who have a nice disdain for what I had to say). I want to see Mel continue speaking out and making movies. I think his is a great story of redemption. That is all I was trying to say.

Wow! That’s really great news about MG. The last thing I had heard were the reports on his Jewish comments. He was in a pretty sad state then.

I wish MG all good things for the future. It sounds like he’s doing great without my good wishes, but a few extra good vibes never hurt anyone.

I know he is not Roman Catholic but he is Catholic and I respect him for his ability to make the world alive to the sufferings of Jesus in “The Passion”. Making that movie took a lot of guts. I applaud him for that, and hope he comes out with more good movies.

I thought he was a Roman Catholic. I believe I read where he said he was a pre-Vatican 1 Catholic. Is that correct? If not I would love to know.

It is my understanding that he favors traditional Masses. I believe he has either an SSPX (irregular relationship with Rome) or an SSPV (sedavacantist) chapel on his estate.

Mel Gibson is not losing his religion. He keeps investing his “Passion of the Christ” money into the church he built in Agoura Hills, Calif.

Last year, Gibson parked another $8.2 million in his AP Reilly Foundation, the tax-free entity that takes care of his Holy Family Catholic Church.

Gibson’s church is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church because it does not acknowledge the authority of the pope or the Vatican or the doctrine known as Vatican II. Gibson and many of his fellow congregants are Holocaust deniers, as is Gibson’s father, who has been known to contribute to neo-Nazi publications.

I have seen him in an interview acknowledge the holocaust.
