Unfortunately I don’t.

But I enjoy reading the book of Maccabees. How it talks about the resurrection, about the brothers who die for God, about the soldiers giving aims for their fallen comrades.

That’s something I would enjoy.

You’re probably not the only one… but I respectfully disagree with you. I saw the movie back in my evangelical days and it put a different spin on the Passion. A lot of evangelicals tend to have a sort of goofed up understanding of the Passion. Seeing Gibson’s movie put everything into better focus for me.

The violence you mention is the means of our redemption. “By His wounds, we are healed.” As an evangelical, I didn’t have a proper understanding of that. But now I do. So the violence was, oddly enough, a major part of it for me.

That said, when I do my annual Passion rewatch, I always stick with the shorter, less bloody version of the movie. Because there’s only so much I can take, you know? But seeing the regular bloody version was an important step for me.

I think it would make a good movie. Lots of action.
 
I think the story of Jesus’ appearances to the disciples and the others would make a great story, along with the founding of the early church, the beginning of persecutions, evangelizing the Gentiles, and the spread all over the world. I would focus it on one or two of the disciples, to keep it from turning into too long of an epic,
But it wouldn’t work to have it in Aramaic and Latin, since no one would understand the subtleties of the discussions in the early church.

This is the fourth page of this thread and no one thus far has said that perhaps Mel should stop with biblical films, given his antisemitic views. And I’d hardly describe him as Catholic. There’s so much baggage he now brings to every project. Why sully a faith-oriented film with an association with him?

So who meets your criteria for worthiness of a biblical film? Scorsese? Tarantino?

That could do as good of a job as Gibson did with the passion? I’m waiting for names.

Shouldn’t we be as forgiving of Mel as we are when others do stupid things?

Forgiveness has nothing to do with it. Forgiving him (whatever that would mean) doesn’t ipso facto mean he should continue making films devoted (in part) to discussion and portrayals of people he has openly disparaged

I don’t really care so long as it’s not an avowed antisemite. This isn’t about liking or disliking Gibson. It’s about common sense and respect for the people discussed and portrayed in biblical films.

I do not. But as part of my job, I work with hundreds in the Jewish community and many of them find Gibson exceptionally poorly positioned to create films focused on the Jewish people. Since they’re part of the very community that he has openly disparaged, I tend to consider their responses seriously.

I do, however, find many similarities between The Passion and torture porn…

You must be a big fan of Roman Polanski. I’m guessing you’re eagerly awaiting any future film of his that centers on rape victims.
