Sadly, by using an actual person, it implies something different. Suggestion for future, pose a hypothetical question without using an actual persons name.

No one is asking about his soul. I brought it up to learn about Church policy.
Church policy: Divorce is a bad thing and should be avoided, but at times, it is needed due to the situation. Being in a state of divorce is not in and of itself a sin, nor does it prohibit any sacrement, save matrimony to another person or Holy Orders. Should one who is divorced seek a new marriage, the first marriage must be annulled, or the ex-spouse die, before it can be performed. Should they seek to become a priest, an annulment is needed as well.

In other words, he is not in a state of sin because he is divorced. he can receive Communion,

Thank you, Ralph. I appreciate it.

Why is this anyone’s business? Do you ask the standing of the guy down the block with the Church when he gets a divorce?

I will never understand why people think it is ever appropriate to discuss the private inner workings of someone’s marriage on a public forum.

i think it is worthy of discussion because it can teach persons both inside and outside the Church what the Church says about marriage. What the Church teaches about marriage is beautiful. It’s too bad not everyone in the Church (by a long shot ) can (I mean: will) stay faithful to those teachings. One very good reason i don’t want to get married… is because i doubt many men take the Catholic sacrament of marriage as seriously as i do… (not these days…)

Marriage is done in public… I see nothing wrong with publicly discussing it, as long as non-essentials are avoided… things that do little but appeal to the prurient nature of some (all?) humans…

I .God Bless Mel Gibbson, let the Peace of the Holy Spirit decend upon him, and guide him! We should all pray for him.
Peace!
sorry but i can’t help but wonder if you would be this charitable and understanding if the person being discussed was just some ordinary Joe Blow who, like so many… became attracted to someone other than his wife and just cuoldn’t seem to say NO… like he should have…

Jesus said that the way to eternal life is narrow and there are few who find it…

I just don’t think we should be having too much… “compassion” for someone who left his wife… What about having some compassion for HER?

I believe this thread has run its course. The Church policy has been explained several times by several people now.

I try not judging any one even an average Joe. God only knows how many mistakes I have made in my life. I try to strive for love, holiness and prayer. I always fall short, but that’s why Jesus is there to pick me up. I try to live by the rule"He who has no sin cast the first stone", what others do is between them and God. I have found prayer always to be an answer in my life!👍
Peace be with you!

Let us not judge Mel Gibson. no one really knows what is going on. There are many different stories about three different women with the same first name that he is suppose to be involved with.

He has done great work in the film industry. I don’t read tabloids etc., can you base the truth on any of the media?

One thing that was mentioned was that he is bi-polar. That would explain many things about him. If indeed he is bi-polar his drinking is related to this. Many many people who are bi-polar self medicate with alcohol. Unless you understand the hell they go through with this disease you can’t understand why they need to feel better. Of course alcohol is not the answer, but for a moment it makes them feel better.

Many people who are bi-polar are very creative. When I look back at seeing him on EWTN I recall that he did seem manic.

Please don’t judge him, as if he does have this condition it is a disease and terribly misunderstood.

My daughter is bi-polar and her father was bi-polar. I believe that unless you have lived with this problem you really can’t judge what their lives and their families lives are like.

Let us pray for him and his family, not judge him. Who among us are going to cast the first stone?

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Bernadette

So many folks in this thread are acting like nobody should be able to comment on Mel’s misbehavior because Mel Gibson’s affairs should be private and he’s a sinner just like the rest of us, etc. And the comparison to Solomon and David and other sinners…etc.

Look, Mel has worn his faith on his sleeve publically for years now. He stepped up and made it known he’s a Catholic and made the Passion of the Christ testifying to his faith. I hear folks talk about the importance of works and individual holiness in this CAF every day and yet when Mel has not one but several falls from grace, he gets a free pass. Boloney!

He’s not just getting divorced, he’s shacking up with a Russian singer. That’s not good testimony to how the sacraments have changed Mel and it makes our Church look bad. These things DO matter. If he wanted to make his faith this public, the price to be paid along with that is to live up to his ethics and be a good Catholic, represent.

Mel has made public comments about extra ecclesium non salus** in the past when he was still happily married to Robyn and said that because she’s an Anglican, her chances of going to heaven are far less than his own and if it happens, hey, it’s ex cathedra, what’re ya gonna do? I would NEVER speak of my wife like that in public, if she were protestant or not.

He had seven kids with this lady and has cheated on her for years while publically bragging about building his own Catholic church and attending Latin-only masses etc.

We trash protestant ministers and politicians in CAF who don’t live up to their faith and/or bash Catholicism. When Mel behaves like this after bragging for years about being a Catholic and loving the fidelity of his manogomy, this hurts Catholics and lowers credibility. The guy is a high-profile Catholic.

How in the heck can a tribunal find this guy was never truly married to Robyn (essentially that’s what an annulment is) in the first place after having been married to her for 25 years and having seven kids with her and a whole career by her side? HUH? If he gets an annulment, that’s a real indicator of a sham.

He’s going to have to just live in sin with Oksana or not remarry. An annulment is insane?

I loved Gibson growing up. Heck, Mad Max, the Road Warrior, Lethal Weapon, Passion, Braveheart…what’s NOT to love! But his personal life is over-the-top with the anti-semitic stuff, the drunkenness, the cheating…come on

People have said, “well since he made the Passion, he’s been assaulted by demons right and left…” hey, aren’t we all!?

Pray for Mel’s conversion, pray for my conversion, pray for all humanity’s conversion, we are all pitiful sinners!

i love what Fr Groeschel says (paraphrasing this Holy man); **'When we go before Jesus to answer for our life, all i will be able to whisper under my tears and shame is “mercy” '.
**
No man is perfect, only Jesus is perfect, thank GOD!!!

I don’t see how Mel Gibson can be considered a strict RC. The man has been keeping a girlfriend! Has the Church gone that far astray? The man has been living an immoral life while professing to be such a good Catholic. What a hypocrite! I’d be interested in seeing if his marriage is annuled and if he then is permitted to marry his girlfriend in the church.
Whoa…He who casts the first stone here pigtown. How dare you say Gibson doesn’t live an immoral life when you don’t even know him. He has been seperated for 3 years from his wife Robin. Are you yourself without sin?

People should be grateful for Gibson’s movie “The Passion of The Christ”, there were many, many conversions during this time. He is a good Catholic who loves the Lord, that’s it. He isn’t perfect just like all of you here, so leave him alone and pick on someone else. Perhaps looking in the mirror.

The Catholic Church is not a Museum of Saints, but a Hospital of Sinners. Only God knows where Mel Gibson’s soul is.
👍👍

As for the OP, maybe get a cue from the forum rule. Discussion on living politicians is out for obvious reason. As fallible Christians maybe we could extend it to livng pesrson of another profession. Out of love.

I don’t know the rules of Gibson. If you tell hes very strict RC then he doing different work.

Just curious, but can anyone tell me what might be the Church’s stance towards Mr. Gibson once his divorce is final? Will he still be able to recieve the Sacraments? I know he’s a strict RC, and I was just wondering how he might be treated now. I hope not too harshly.
according to the Church’s teaching he is guilty of adultery. no he cannot receive the Eucharist. but him and his wife can still reconcille. lets pray that they will.

With regards to the Eucharist that would only apply IF the person did not go to confession and amend the situation. You can be divorced and still receive the Eucharist.

No, I don’t know Mel Gibson. He may have been separated from his wife for 3 years but he was still married. Being separated is not the same as being divorced. He has been commiting adultery and that is definitely a sin.

Is being divorced different from being seperated according to his stated faith? Are there not the same religious if not civil restrictions on him remarrying?
