Hi everyone. What are the main differences in belief between Melkite Greek Catholics and Roman Catholics? Thanks!
Are you asking about the Melkite in particular, the Byzantine Churches, all of the Eastern Catholic Churches, or all of the Catholic Churches that are not ‘Roman’ Catholic.Hi everyone. What are the main differences in belief between Melkite Greek Catholics and Roman Catholics? Thanks!
None. Both Catholic, so no main differences.Hi everyone. What are the main differences in belief between Melkite Greek Catholics and Roman Catholics? Thanks!
Plenty of main differences: liturgy, sacramental praxis, ecclesiology, spirituality, canonical practice…None. Both Catholic, so no main differences.
There Sacraments and liturgy are completely valid as Catholic. They are in union with the Pope just as Roman (and all) Catholics are. Their canonical practice is also authorized by the Pope (just like all Catholics).Plenty of main differences: liturgy, sacramental praxis, ecclesiology, spirituality, canonical practice…
And so it goes.
Melkites (and Eastern Catholics generally) are not just Roman Catholics who say Mass funny.
The Code of Canon Law for Eastern Churches was promulgated by the authority of Pope John Paul II. If the Pope didn’t approve it, it would not be effective.\Their canonical practice is also authorized by the Pope (just like all Catholics).\
It is not necessary for Eastern Catholics that their canonical practice or anything else be "authorized by the Pope."
Don’t feel bad. A lot of Catholics (especially self-styled traditionalists), to say nothing about Protestants, are under the impression that the Latin Church IS the only Catholic Church. For long I was a typically ( I suppose) ignorant western Latin rite Catholic who was unaware even of the existence of Melkites, Chaldeans etc but lately reading and learning about them has been fascinating. One begins to see the history of our Church is a wholly different light. Thanks to everyone for the links posted here.
Melkites are Catholic. The Milkites like the Greeks use leavened bread for communion, while the Catholic Church uses unleavened bread – just like Our Lord used unleavened bread for the last supper and the institution of the Eucharist.
