Hi there, I am not sure if I am posting in the right area but I am just wondering if any of you would concur with me on this or say that my ears need to be checked. The church I used to go to a bit would play “Come Thou Fount” every so often as the entrance hymn. For some reason, I keep thinking whenever I hear it that the melody comes from Holst’s Jupiter much like Thaxted aka “O God Beyond All Praising”. is I know both Thaxted and the melody for CTF are under different names but both sound eerily similar. I checked Wikipedia and Google but there is no mention of the melody of CTF when talking about Jupiter. Any opinions (especially if this is the right area).

My church sings this occasionally as well. I don’t think the melody is the same as “O God Beyond All Praising”. They are somewhat similar, but they’re not the same. “I Vow to Thee my Country” has the same melody as “O God Beyond All Praising” though.

Some hymnals will duplicate melodies for different hymns (and sometimes the exact same hymn will have different melodies in two different hymnals). Look at the bottom of the printed text in the hymnal for each (or in some hymnals, the “Index of Tunes” in the back); you may see that the publisher did duplicate the melody from one to the other.

Now responding specifically to the Original Post:

After listening to Thaxted (Jupiter) and Nettleton (Come Thou Fount) and looking at the sheet music (Thaxted and Nettleton), and speaking as a music lover but not a music expert, I agree that the two have some rhythmic and melodic similarities, but not identical melodies. A music expert could perhaps state more precisely what the similarities are.

The similarity has been recognized and adapted in this arrangement by Garrett Breeze (scroll down to Come Thou Fount, and you can click on the Play icon to hear it).

What I meant by my post was that Come Thou Fount sounded a lot like a part from Jupiter.
