Memorial Acclimation

Today we had a visiting priest Celebrate the Mass. He had a strong accent, possibly Africa. Anyway, he sang Oh come let us adore Him for the Memorial Acclimation. I never heard that done before and am wondering about it.

Obviously, he’s going to be used to the customs and practices and variants allowed in his home diocese.

The parish I grew up at had a priest from Africa, and at daily Mass, he would often include some sort of acclamation at the elevation of the Host and Chalice just after their consecration. He used “O Come Let Us Adore Him” sometimes; other times was “Come and worship royal priesthood, Come and praise Him holy nation, Worship Jesus our redeemer, He is precious King of Glory.”

It’s not the custom in the U.S., and strictly speaking, it shouldn’t be done. As for the Memorial Acclamation, “O Come…” isn’t one that the Bishops in the U.S. have approved for use. It may be a custom that the visiting priest is used to, and doesn’t know things aren’t the same here in the U.S.

I don’t even think that it’s in any of the ones approved in the Latin version of the Roman Missal. I have read the Roman Missal from Mexico and no such acclamation is in there.

I, too, have experienced this in the past with a visiting priest from Nigeria. It may be an African episcopal conference thing, but, that doesn’t mean that it is allowed here. The faithful were confused and I had to inform the parish administrator.
