A close friend of mine is a young widow. We’re coming up on the first anniversary of her husband’s death and I’d like to set up a memorial mass in his name. How do I go about doing this? I’m guessing I could contact the local churches to see who has an opening on the day of his passing? Do they offer a mass card that I could give to her? Is there a standard offering to do this or what would be an acceptable donation? I already enrolled him in a prayer society right after his passing who does a daily mass offering for all members, but wanted to do something special on the anniversary of his passing.

I would first call my own church or her church to see if a Mass is available on the desired day.

My parish is small and I have pretty decent luck having a Mass said on a loved one’s birthday or anniversary. Sometimes I may have to vary it by a day or two, but the prayers still work. I will either email the secretary with the days I want or go in person. In the event that it is for a deceased person and I want to send a Mass card, I let her know, and she will get that for me. Our standard stipend for a Mass is $5, but that may vary from parish to parish.
