Just have a quick question. What is the difference berween a memorial, a feast, and a solemnity? This was covered in my RCIA class last year but I don’t remember.

Solemnities are the highest ranking days and are often holy days of obligation…

Feasts are celebrations that honor Jesus, Mary and the saints.

Memorials are the lowest ranking days on the church calendar. These are celebrations of all the rest of recognized saints who don’t have full fledged feast days.

Hope this helps, and welcome home.👍

Additionally, the various rankings of feasts are used to determine which Mass texts will be used on a particular day. Higher ranking feasts take precedence in cases when two sets of readings or prayers fall on the same day.

Additionally additionally: Memorials may either be optional or obligatory. Optional Memorials during the season of Lent are celebrated as Commemorations (even lower key than otherwise).

Thanks for all your answers I really appreciate it. 🙂 One of the great things about the Catholic Chruch is there is always something new to discover or learn.
