Memorizing Scripture - Specific Verses

I’ve been really diving into Sacred Scripture the past few months and the more I do, the more I notice connections and links between books, recalling one verse that applies to or enlightens another elsewhere.

Coming naturally, I have memorized some verses that I frequent a lot whether in study or discussion. I’m very good at memorization in general, I’d like to have a good chunk of verses memorized so that I can recall them in talks I give, discussions, writings…

Are there specific verses people would suggest that are good to have memorized or at the tip of the tongue? Also, what ways did you find most effective to memorize scripture?

Are there specific topics you are addressing, or maybe personal issues that you are addressing? If it is just a general question, then one of my favorites are Ephesians 2:1-10. Great concise summation of the gospel.

No. Can’t think of any…because living scripture and praying scripture is far better than memorizing scripture.
I didn’t know that this was an either/or predicament. Usually the purpose for memorizing scripture is to then apply it, whether it be by curbing and guiding my actions with the law, or reminding one about the promises of the gospel.
 
The ones I’ve memorized are John 3:16-17, Matthew 5:44-45 (favorite), 2 Corinthians 5:7, Psalms 23:1, part of 1 Corinthians 13, Genesis 1:1, Phil 4:13, Revalation 12:1, maybe some others. It may be good to have verses ready for defensive purposes, so try memorizing verses that will help you in arguments. Some I’ve just learned because they are my favorites, or I see them a lot. Also, memorize comforting verses that help you (ex. If you’re prone to anxiety, memorize verses to help calm you.)
 
When I was much younger, I had many verses memorized. Now, I can barely remember a few. Instead, I keep several notes and references in the front of my Bible on index cards or cheat sheets that I’ve found various places that were preprinted (many are Protestant sources, but nonetheless good verse references when used in proper context). I’ve also found online Bibles have great tools for this (YouVersion or Bible Gateway).
 
I memorized Psalm 100 when I was about 7 years old. It’s a beautiful Psalm to pray in praise of God and his goodness.
 
I have sort of memorized Psalms 110 and 127, but that’s only because I listen to some settings of them. But I only know what the soloists sing since the choirs can be more confusing to listen too. It’s in Latin, but I can figure out what verse is about.

“Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.” Psalm 119:11. This sounds like a good reason to memorize scripture verses, and then as you said, live the scripture.

Like to suggest my opinion,instead of memorizing Scripture ,although its nice initially for study and discussion , we should treasure the Word of God in our Hearts like Mother Mary did and meditate on it frequently and know the inner meaning which will be reveled only to the Humble and contrite in Spirit and to know the Word of God in Spirit or in the Holy Spirit rather than just memorizing them using you memory ,intelligence or you brains to understand Scripture ,which will be a greater help, spiritually,the value,guidance, avoid sins and which lead us to Holiness.

Psalms 119:9-12 9 How can young people keep their way pure?By guarding it according to your word.10 With my whole heart I seek you;do not let me stray from your commandments.
11 I treasure your word in my heart,so that I may not sin against you.12 Blessed are you, O Lord;teach me your statutes.

Luke 2:19,51 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.

2 Corinthians 3:3 and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

This is one of the verses I was committing to memory this past Sunday! 😃

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
 
For me, memorization comes after going back to the same passages again and again. That’s the approach I would advocate.

Some passages I go back to again and again:
  • Hosea 11:1–4
  • Psalm 23
  • Psalm 51
  • Genesis 1–3
  • Luke 1
  • John 1
  • Acts 2
  • Isaiah 53
  • Philippians 2:6–11
  • Wisdom 3
Lots of the psalms and canticles used in Liturgy of the Hours are great passages to memorize. The Magnificat, the Benedictus, Philippians 2, Tobit 13, Daniel 3, Jeremiah 31:10–14, Isaiah 40, Isaiah 61, Isaiah 66, etc.

Honestly, praying the Liturgy of the Hours is a great way to go about memorizing passages. Pray through morning and evening prayer for a year, and you’ll have a lot of the passages pretty well memorized. I think it’s a great way to really have Scripture engrained into our mind and heart.
