Memory Foam or Latex Foam beds?

You may want to stay away from foams entirely.

In addition for a couple of years now they add chemicals (boric acid I think) for fire retardency.

You can get all cotton and wool mattresses- just google them.

So is it a regular looking mattress or is it the look of a tempur-pedic? Do you have a photo of your mattress by chance? What size did you get? And what ‘type’ (they have several)?

Do they use the harmful chemicals like the above poster stated? I looked at their site and couldn’t find photos. :confused: It also did not state if there are any added chemicals (maybe I missed it somewhere 🤷 ).

Last September, we bought a new mattress. It just so happens that it was the Sealy Spring Free Latex like you’re talking about that has a pillowtop and everything. It doesn’t squish into a little box like the ones you can get at Costco. It was actually THE heaviest mattress sold in the store (according to the big strong delivery guys). BUT, what we ended up with was truly a pretty good compromise. We went with a Stearns & Foster that has super strong steel coils in the core of the mattress, but is topped with a 5 inch latex pillowtop. It’s very nice as well.

Honestly, I would reccommend the latex. It has a squishy feel as you climb up onto it (although our bed is very tall which makes it hard to get onto to begin with), which niether one of cared for. We were used to a Beautyrest that’s super firm around the perimeter. But once you lay out on the latex I felt like it let my body lay the way it was built to lay. My hips sunk in a little deeper to the mattress, and took pressure off of my spine whether I was laying on my side or my back. I didn’t find it the most comfortable mattress for stomach sleeping, though. Latex is sort of the best of both worlds- you get some of the sensation of memory foam but that sinking/settling feeling is a lot less in the latex. The reason we never went with the memory foam was that it seemed like after laying in one position for a while, you had to work yourself out of a hole just to turn over.

I would try test out the latex, definitely. And as far as the smell, the latex really did have a “smell” for the first week or so. They call it “off-gassing”. It’s normal. They are anti-bacterial, so I don’t know that they would get a bad smell years down the road. Let me know if you have any more questions I might be able to help with.

Oops! Something wierd happened to my reply. The part where I say that we traded the Latex mattress in because my DH felt it was too soft got cut out somehow. Just to clarify, I thought the sealy spring free latex was glorious and LOVED every minute of sleep on it, but DH didn’t like it so it went back and we bought a Stearns & Foster coil/latex combo mattress.
 
We stayed in a new hotel last summer on vacation, and the best thing about the whole vacation was the bed.

At home, I would wake up every morning barely able to walk. My lower back had started to hurt every time I sat down - especially on a hard chair. On vacation, I was popping out of bed like I was 10 years younger.

After we returned home, we bought a latex mattress. It is think and heavy and COMFORTABLE. It doesn’t have a pillow top, but kind of an egg crate top. It was expensive, but a lot cheaper than back surgery in my book.

After a few weeks in my new bed, my lower back pain completely subsided. Like a new person.👍

Sorry I don’t have a photo right now, but I’ll do my best to describe.

They send it in 2 boxes (for a king). There are actually 3 layers of foam that you put inside of a mattress cover. You can arrange them according to your firmness desire. When you zip it up, it looks like a regular mattress. The thing is HEAVY! Then you cover it with a wool mattress pad. That is a problematic thing - the mattress pad sheds fuzzies like crazy. We’ll probably get an additional cotton one to put on top.

We got the Dunlop mattress. When I was researching it seemed like a purer process than Talalay, but I can’t find the site that explained the difference between the two. All I can say is we like it.

As far as harsh chemicals, I’d be surprised if they were in there. They advertise the latex as a natural, environmentally friendly product. It’s definitely not the same as the memory foam, which has more additives from what I understand.
