I really don’t think that a sample of one shows that this culture encourages men to abandon their children during a massacre. It’s that one guy’s personal cowardice that caused him to do that, not the culture.

Well, if protecting women and children is “what men do” why are the guys who did it heroes?
Be cause it is not natural. Self-preservation is an instinct, self-sacrifice (in whatever form) is not. It has to be socialized from a young age.
So I’d say it is the culture, or at least our hedonistic culture’s failure to inculcate “manly” virtues.

I am curious what peoples views of manliness is. Does being a man include being a hero, or is heroism an act that goes beyond being a man? The question is simply whether heroism is to be expected from all men due to them being men. Is it his duty, or is it as it is for the medal of honor, which is given to those who go beyond the call of duty. If thats the case then the coward is a truely despicable person because he doesn’t represent a man. So no excuse would be acceptable for the man who fled, not even the fight or flight instinct.

This is a good question. Would a girlfriend taking a bullet for her boyfriend be transgressive, then, in some way?
