Men and Hats in Mass

I am sorry, but do you even have to ask?

And the answer is yes, because people do stupid and irreverent things during Mass too!

The other day I was in a nice formal restaurant and I saw this guy with his partner and her parents. During the whole meal he had this stupid hat on, that together with his beard made him look like Fidel Castro. Her parents looked like an older southern couple. I felt bad for them.

Not only should men NOT wear a hat to mass, but a woman should have her head covered out of respect for the Lord according to St. Paul.

As for this F. Castro character, I run across his type all too often. I am neither Jewish nor a backwoods redneck, I doff mine when I enter a restaurant and sit down to eat, or even enter a person’s home. What ever happened to Christian respect and manners???

In my personal experience and also being from Texas, I would never dream of wearing my hat or cap inside the church at all it just isn’t done. I take my hat (stetson) or cap off at the door, outside the door and replace it as soon as I leave.

Perhaps things are different, local customs etc. everywhere else indoors the hat stays on. The only place other than church I de-hat is in a formal restaraunt. This is true throughout nthe state for everyone men wear their hats all of the time, and everywhere other than church.

Besides I am bald and don’t want skin cancer. I am also disabled and doing the dance of removing and replacing my hat would be very difficult for me. Yet I do it in church, hat in one hand and cane in the other.

I know I’m getting offf the main subject and propagandizing, but you should come up here to Ohio. Beautiful pristine country by the Ohio river in the mountains. Really God’s country.

The Scripture teaches, “For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.” I Corinthians 11:7.

Though we are all (men and women) were created in God’s image (Gen 1:27), it is man who bears the glory of God uniquely by his role. Like God, he is given a sphere of sovereignty as the earthly sovereign over God’s created order (JM, 1713).

Hm. Seems to me it’s only disrespectful because you’ve decided it’s disrespectful.

Edit: The poster above me cited Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. My statement still stands: He was addressing a custom of their time: it’s disrespectful because they decided it was disrespectful. Other than that, it seems he’s saying that God wants to see our faces, and wearing hats “hides our faces”, so to speak. That is, if man is the glory of God, and God wants to see us as we are, we should not hide ourselves from his gaze with hats. But I then fail to understand how that does not also apply to women.

Men need to remove their hats in church, period, end of message. I cannot imagine what the canon lawyers were tinking of when they left that out of the 1983 rewrite. Scripture is clear and Sacred Tradition for the previous 1900 years was also.

I am a Native Texan (and bald and a cane) and, yes, it could be a hassle, but while I don’t remove my hat to a Lady, I will tip it. It is, as others have mentioned, good manners. Also, my sainted grand mother would knock it off (along with my head) if I didn’t.

As for other things, Texas is Gods Country, although I will allow as he probably vacations somewhere cooler in the summer.

Yes, I agree. It is a sign of respect for the Lord to remove your hat in Church and good manners on other occasions.

As far as Texas goes, it may be God’s country in winter, but He lives in Ohio. :extrahappy:

I still cannot help but feel that the entire customs we’ve built around headgear are absurd to the point of offensive sexism. Perhaps you can help me.

I say the sexism is unjust, because given a person wearing a hat, if the person is

• male, the situation becomes either neutral or bad.
• female, the situation becomes either neutral or good.

depending on whether they happen to walk into a church. It’s utterly absurd (and you’ll note the sexism that leans “good” to women and “bad” to men).
