This thread is open as an entertainment to discuss about men feeling threatened (or outsmarted) by women smarter than they are. Or vice versa.

I came across this blog post Do Men Still Feel Threatened by Smart Women? New Study Results and it starts with
Do men want to date smart women? Many say they do, but a new study uncovers a disturbing and perhaps long-standing reality: When many men determine that a woman is smarter than they are, their attraction and interest flees.
Researchers came to this conclusion after conducting a study to assess the traits that men desire in a woman. They found that while men are fascinated by the thought of an intelligent woman, they feel threatened and intimidated at the thought of dating her if they feel she’s more intelligent than they are. As a result, they don’t take these women seriously as romantic prospects.
Really?What do you think? 🍿

I think it’s probably for the best.

I think a stupid husband would be a terrible cross to bear. And what if the kids took after him?

My SIL is smarter than my BIL…but she’s more like a second mom.

I do think it is OK for spouses to be smarter in different areas…

I agree with the research. It is very hard being a smart woman in 2015.

It sounds like something women tell their friends is the reason some guy didn’t want to date them.

But maybe there are some men who don’t want to date smarter women. And maybe there are some women who don’t want to date smarter men.

Now what? :o

I’m not advocating for lust or looks only, but am I to really believe that if a good-looking woman happens to sound or even be smarter or more intellectual than her date, the guy will just run for the hills?

Come on…

The only real silver lining I see from the blurb may be a difference in education, but there’s a caveat that with just natural differences that come with say a woman who has a graduate degree versus a man who may not have gone to college.

But that doesn’t even mean the woman is smarter; it just means by going the education route her experiences are different than his are.

My sister is quite intelligent and is an engineer, which is a male-dominant profession. She had quite the trouble with men. As soon as they doing out what she did for a living-BAM- no longer intersted. It seems as if they felt inferior,

I understand it in a way, though I’m not a man. Many men, my husband included, feel like their job is to protect and provide for their family. A wife who can do this more efficiently may make the man feel useless. Oftentimes, intelligence and financial worth or career go hand in hand, so a smart woman may deter a man.

Threatened or turned off? In my experience, women are likewise to prone to flee intelligent men. Or since when were the nerds and geeks the subject of girls’ dreams instead of the quarterbacks they tutored?

OTOH, I lnew many young women who, as soon as they heard a man was an engineer, headed for the hills. Why? They thought he would be a boring nerd.

I read the linked article and the study it refers to (but does not link to, like many substandard websites).

The article linked to fails spectacularly to report on the study - the study itself is quite a bit different from what the WM article made it seem. Besides that, the quotes are idle speculation, and frankly are quite ignorant in light of other research on the same and similar topics (of which the authors fail to mention, preferring instead to make their own ideological statements (look up their bios and other output), knowing that most won’t really understand that such statements have no support from the study). Besides that, the study methodology is simply gruesome to behold - there are so many variables and confounds introduced that I can’t see how this research even got published (but, then again, computer-generated papers get published, so…).

Threatened or turned off?
That’s precisely the game here - the outcomes have many, many interpretations. For example, those men could have had previous negative experiences with woman gloating about doing better (as other research would indicate). Does the study account for that? No. Does it even acknowledge the possibility? No.

I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that men feel insecure when dating a more successful partner.

You wanna know what I think? The study is nothing more than left wing propaganda. Sorry but I’m not buying it. Nothing more than a pathetic attempt to load another shell in the chamber for when it comes down to bringing down the “patriarchy”. For how long have sitcoms, comedy, or anothing of the sort joke constantly about the wife of the family being the brains behind it all. Too many to count. We all know there are plenty of smart women, maybe there is a reason so many are married. But this “study” is laughable

It’s a very very VERY great time to be a self proclaimed intelligent women in 2015. Trust me on this, you have a rather large army standing behind you…with some of the greatest liberal representatives waiving the flag. And if you are single, I promise intelligence is not what’s stopping you from finding a quality man.

A couple of years into our Marriage both my husband and I took IQ tests.

Well, he took the test and I was curious.

When he was done he told me he scored at 120…which is good. It’s above average.

So I took the test. I think I scored a 130 plus or minus a few points. He looked at the score and didn’t say anything at first.

Then he made a comment on marrying such a smart girl.

I jokingly asked him if he was intimidated by it and he was quick to say no!

Later on I checked the browser history and discovered he went back in and took the test again a few more times.

Well, too bad! He’s stuck with me at this point! 😃

I would prefer to date a female who is less intelligent than I am. God designed us males to be leaders. It is impractical to lead those who are more intelligent than you are.

Leaders by nature should be the most intelligent ones in the group; the ones who are most capable. It would be impractical to submit to a man who is less capable than you are.

If anyone disagrees with my worldview, I’d like to hear it. 🍿

Hm, I don’t know that I agree with you about leaders needing to be the most intelligent. They probably should be smart, yes, but I can think of a lot of other skills leaders should possess that don’t require smarts.

How we define intelligence also matters. My husband and I are both reasonably intelligent people, but our strengths are very different.

I think my husband could handle a woman more intelligent than he is. That’s not the case with me on paper (I’m no slouch but he’s gifted) but I’m smart enough that he comes to me asking for help almost as often as I go to him. He also enjoys real competition…anything that pushes him to do better. He does not enjoy easy wins. I think he’s the kind that would find losing to a good opponent more satisfying than completely mopping the floor with someone.

My sister’s ex on the other hand just could not stomach her being good at anything from games to her job. Getting any sort of “good for you” out of him was like pulling teeth.

Pax Christi!

I’m a sapiophile. Ladies, if you know what that word means, and you’re single…

God bless.
