One of the family legends we share with our children is the one about the physics major undergraduates who decided to open up a coconut by microwaving it and letting expanding gasses do the job.

The blew the door off of the microwave.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

(I have a brother who would call that an example of “book smart and rock stupid”.)

This thread is open as an entertainment to discuss about men feeling threatened (or outsmarted) by women smarter than they are. Or vice versa.

I came across this blog post Do Men Still Feel Threatened by Smart Women? New Study Results and it starts with

Really?What do you think? 🍿
First off I have to wonder about this study. Are men also threatened by unicorns and dragons, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus? Just kidding! :p:p:D.
But seriously. My wife is the second smartest person I have met and I have met some pretty smart chaps. It kinda turns me on.

Oh baby talk to me more about the genetic code of strawberries…Monsanto patents, and business strategies…😉

Are you married? If you are will you tell your wife that one of the reasons you chose her was that she was less intelligent than you?
I don’t think he is married but I do hope he tells his girlfriend or future Fiancé this when she asks why he wants to marry her.
I’m not biologically eligible for marriage due to my young age: 18 years. 🍕

I promise you, when you are married, you’re never going to wish that your wife was dumber than she is.
Though I have not read the entirety of this thread, I’d like to pitch in my 2 cents. As a Catholic male in his mid-20’s, I have wanted to find someone who is extremely intelligent or perhaps educated would be the better word for several years. I actually like the idea of having someone like this because I want to engage in conversations that tackle the biggest questions humanity asks among other reasons! Experience from former friends of mine makes me want this even more, but I recently added something just as important as intelligence to my list and from what I see, it is a rarity these days: wisdom. A woman of God who is both is extremely attractive to me, and while being attracted physically is also a big one, I can’t deny the intense allure of what the ladder brings. I have been been thinking perhaps it is best to wait a couple more years since I do wish to continue school, and hopefully by then they will be more mature women around my age. Of course, this isn’t to say younger women who are mature and wise beyond their years can’t be found. Only time and God will tell! 😉

Good hunting!

Philosophy graduate student women could be a very good pool for you to explore.

Men should always marry a more intelligent woman, it makes it easier to accept that she is always right.
😉

You are legally old enough to marry without parental permission in every state in the US except Nebraska and Mississippi. All states allow 17 year olds to marry with parental consent, and some allow marriage earlier than that. Where civil law allows it, the Church theoretically allows men over 16 and women over 14 to marry.

You are not likely to be ready for marriage, but you are certainly “biologically eligible” for marriage.

If she really thinks she is always right, she doesn’t have the mental capacity necessary for marriage. (I’m not joking. I’ve met someone who attempted marriage with a person who literally could not allow herself to admit to being wrong. It was an impossible situation.)

🤷 I live in Asia.

Who would dare marry without consent from their parents? I’m surprised most states allow this. And, marrying when you’re younger than age 17? Who would do that? Not many would be financially prepared for such a responsibility.

Most times, parents do approve of one’s choice of spouse, but it’s not formally required and they’re not very involved in the process of dating. We choose our spouses ourselves. I can’t imagine a legal requirement for parents to approve (in the case of legal adults). Here, once you are a legal adult your parents no longer have a (government-enforced) say over anything you do.

Very few people marry under 17 (in the US), although as EJ says it is permitted in some places.

Very under-aged marriage is technically legal in many areas of the US (especially with parental permission), but it’s not common and probably never has been.

Interesting.

I work with a bunch of engineers in the railroad industry so my work environment may be different than yours.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in this industry that can keep one humble. Especially if what does go wrong can cost lives.
Yes a lot may have to do.with the industry. Being humble is not common between lawyers, littleless female.lawyers…

Lawyers who can’t get a date? Now that’s a confounding variable. 😉

I see what you mean. The smart women I know were all in the sciences. They could hardly beat the male scientists off with a stick–wow, you’re a woman and I don’t even have to leave lab to find you! And you know all the characters in Star Trek and you are used to being around men who care how their clothing looks! How cool is that?

I have seen women in a meeting with a group of men, had the woman make a point and get totally ignored, and then have one of the guys make exactly the same point and get total agreement as if it were the first time anyone said anything like that. We women just looked at each other in disbelief. Those things do happen. You have to learn to cope with it without getting bitter, though, because no one is good enough that they’ll attract listeners by being bitter. It is going away, though. Students in grade school aren’t hearing the gender-specific expectations they once did, and I think that helps a great deal. When people come by their biases innocently, it is difficult for them to even see them as biases.
Yes this seems to be a massive problem between female lawyers. I have multiple acquantainces and friends.from.law.school who ended up having children through sperm donation and one of the justifications they throw out is the whole I ma not in a relationship because men are threatened by smart women.so I gotta get pregnant before time.runs out. Too.sad that they don’t understand that what pushes men away is their attitudes.

Weeeell, how realistic is it to tell somebody, “Have a totally different personality!”

Amy Chua (the famous Tiger Mom) seems plenty intense, but she’s married with two kids.

There are unfortunately persons who have to grow up too fast and must learn to be self-reliant too young. They can be legally emancipated from their parents–declared to be their own guardians–even though they would usually be considered minors because of their age. This is an example of someone I can think of who would have reached a point of maturity at such a young age, simply because they had to do it. What breaks most does not break all. Some rise up to meet what life throws at them. Well, if you are 16, unusually mature, and yet alone in the world, getting married to someone who is also mature enough to form a durable marriage might be the best thing for you. (It is extremely unusual for people under 20 or 21 to marry, but especially rare for two people under 21 to marry each other. When someone marries so young, it is usually a marriage between someone 17 and someone else who is 21 or older.)

As for parental consent, when people are old enough to marry it is merely a courtesy to obtain the consent of the parents. It is by no means required by divine law that you choose the spouse your parents would have chosen for you. When your relationship with your parents is good and they are wise, then it is wise to consult with them as you go through life. That, unfortunately, is not always the case. There are people who would never be able to marry at all, if they had to wait for someone agreeable to both their parents and themselves.

*Can. 1083 §1. A man before he has completed his sixteenth year of age and a woman before she has completed her fourteenth year of age cannot enter into a valid marriage.

§2. The conference of bishops is free to establish a higher age for the licit celebration of marriage.*

I think there are more women willing to put up with a spouse who thinks he is all that because he makes a lot of money. Women are a little bit more likely to let that character flaw go without challenging it directly.

Of course, the other problem is that feminism in our time encourages women to believe their own projections about the attitudes and motives of others over what other people tell them directly. They are not just given permission to reject negative feedback about their arrogance, but positively encouraged to automatically interpret it as misogyny!! They are so concerned that someone might dismiss them unfairly that they will not allow anyone to call them on objectively bad behavior!

If you tell a male lawyer that he is a pushy jerk, he may say, “well, too bad.” He does not say, “you man-hating bigot! You wouldn’t say I’m a pushy jerk if I were a female lawyer.” He might say, “you wouldn’t dare to say I’m a pushy jerk if I were a female lawyer,” but that is because the female lawyers hves been encouraged by certain misguided women’s rights advocates to reject the suggestion that a woman can be too pushy, strident, or full of herself.

This is not merely a personality problem. A few people are born incorrigibly arrogant, but most people can learn humility, if anyone bothers to teach them. Yes, at some point it is realistic to say, “your personality could use some work.” I would agree that it is not realistic to expect big results in an adult. Changing our mental habits in adulthood is tough going.

Yes, I’d say that women who are arrogant about their intelligence and career success will have a harder time finding a spouse than women who are arrogant in “traditionally feminine” areas where female arrogance is more tolerated, such as her looks or her social standing. I’d have to admit that.

Men should always marry a more intelligent woman, it makes it easier to accept that she is always right.
😉
Haha! I have heard this saying countless times throughout the years. Frankly, it seems that regardless of intelligence women will always find a way to get us men to accept they are right in every type of situation.

It hurts less to admit she is right even if you don’t think she is right if she is smarter than you.
