I’ve heard plenty of sermons on modesty in dress, mostly being placed on how women dress, making men more prone to sin. On the other hand, I have NEVER heard a sermon directed to men to quit playing mind games on women and to be careful with their words toward women, lest a woman be prone to sin between her ears.

Has anyone else noticed this, and what do you make of it?

I am going to have to say that it will depend on where you are going to hear the sermons. I have heard plenty of sermons and talks about men and their responsibilities at it relates to women. Are the sermons specific about men playing “mind games”, no, but how many times have you been there to hear the sermon about Ephesians 5? That sermon hits right at the core of what you are talking about. Calling men to “love their wives as Christ loved the Church.”

I am not sure if this is personally directed by a specific personal encounter of if this is just a basic general statement. However, men, especially Catholic men have to become stronger in their faith, be willing to die for their wives and their families or we will continue to spiral downward as a faith community. Men have a very big responsibility when it comes to their families and their faith. Now that is not an excuse or a way to excuse behavior, it is meant to show that we, as men, need to be the ones to step up and “die” for love of our spouse.

I actually wasn’t even thinking about married men. Men who are single and play with women’s emotions to get what they want.

I wish those men would stop playing mind games on me! All those riddles… they confuse my little brain so much I start to think about sinning in order to save myself from the spiralling confusion.

What I have noticed recently shopping for pull on V neck shirts, is that I have to wear a shirt under the shirt I’m buying in order to not expose 3/4 of my boobs.

The same goes for dress sweaters.

Either thats the predominate style, or I’m overly wide at the waist resulting in my being under tall from by boobs to my shoulders.

As far as your comments about controlling what men say, IMO the majority of what they say - I generally tend to believe it ranges somewhere between half truths and outright lies. Test everything, hire a detective if need be. 🙂

I think you are right… I have made that observation too.
Purity is reflected in how we talk. I can honestly say that most times where I have crossed the line with my ex it started with him making sexual hints.
What our hearts are full off, the mouth runs over with, says the Lord.

If you ask me, people should stop believing too much in the surface value of things altogether. Although I admit, words are actually more revealing of a person than physical appearance but they can still be just as ambiguous and insufficient source of information about any person’s character.

I don’t think I could play a mind game if I had to. In my experience, men are much more prone to being manipulated by women (mentally or visually) than vice versa. Am I wrong?

It goes both ways. No, your experience is not wrong…it’s just your experience. 😉 I’m sure forumites could post their experiences and they would all even out.

I suspect, though, that in general, men manipulate women for sex, women manipulate men for things other than sex (money, attention, etc.). It seems clear to me that if women want sex, they don’t have to do any manipulating at all. 😃

I find suggesting that women are weak between the ears offensive.

Most university (UK) and college (USA) graduates are women. In the UK, women pass more exams than men. Yet the top graduate jobs are mainly held by men. Sexism still exists in the workplace.

So actually, it is man’s pride that’s at fault. The only fault women have here is succeeding too well for their own good.

I believe he is talking about women being weak between the ears in moral decision making. And I think a lot of that notion has to do with the fact that women seem really bad at taking responsibility for their actions. You can see that here with women discussing their reasons for fornicating: low self-esteem, damaged relationship with a parent, seeking approval in a relationship. While men seem to excuse fornication with immodesty, raging hormones, ect… So I see how you can get men are visually weak and women are weak between the ears, but that isn’t exactly how I would have put it.

I think you are right. Men are actually more vulnerable than women to being toyed with.

It’s interesting hearing the concern about men playing mind games.

In my experience, women do this more often and more skillfully. The only men I know who intentionally tried mind games were essentially boys, immature. Men I know tend to view game-playing as childish or impractical, or something that only girls do (thus something that’s not considered too cool for a male to be doing).

Anecdotally, I have learned, to my dismay, that there are times when my straightforward words are horribly bent into tangled, twisted misinterpretations by women who simply did not believe plain and simple statements.

I did have a boyfriend who was “charming like the devil”… he made me so close to despair like no one has ever done in my life.

I think Christians are called to be charitable and clear in their speech an actions. Many in the secular world, like this guy, are not, and they do and say anything to get you tangled around their finger to have you where they want you.
Men do it differently than women, but no less, and no less refined. Thats just my experience.

Being in good faith doesn’t make a person stupid by the way… on the contrary. But it does make one an easier target for abuse and manipulation.

I have this problem too with my boy(friend)… its like he doesn’t understand me, and when he repeats my words it sounds totally different from what I just said…

I don’t know if this is a consequence of the fall, that men and women have a difficulty understanding each other’s dialect… or if it should be seen as a blessed challenge only.

We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig, dig the whole day through… in a hole.

So all women blame sin of their weakness but men have more justifiable, honest reasons? Source for this assertion? Statistical analysis of reasons given? Or it this based on stereotypes? Answers on a postcard please.

Wow! You mean you actually have sermons that tell people to dress more modestly?..I’ve never heard that from the pulpit. We are in a college town and about half the congregation is dressed immodestly, and I am no prude!. Be glad that they are telling people about sin. We never hear about it.

I would be alerted if a priest talked about modesty… honestly I think women have often been a soft/ easy target. I’d personally respect it more if he speaks about the mortal sin of porn or of why contraception isn’t good…
At any rate, immodesty is often not a mortal sin, because there is a lot of cultural influence, modesty-concept has changed over time, people are simply clueless (often the really innocent ones are most clueness, because girls just don’t think like boys) and so actual immodesty is often a sign that there hasn’t been a deep conversion or education in the faith where this should have occurred.
You can’t tell a heathen not to wear certain clothes… No, first thing first is evangelisation. Thats what we need from the pulpit and what we often don’t get. if people are well catechised and preached the Gospel to, then all other things will take care of themselves.

Perhaps what was meant is that some women choose not to be aware of the “visual power” that they posess?
