From reading another thread I thought it would be a good thing to ask what men find distracting (immodest) in womens dress. No rules just what you think.

Since no one else has answered:

Dresses above the knees, cleavage showing or belly button showing.

Pants that are a size or more too small. Tight shirts designed to prominently display the breasts. Everything epower just said.

its not rocket science.

tight clothing and shirts that show too much.

Overly exposed breasts. Besides the immodesty, it just looks plain sloppy. Countenance is where a women’s true physical beauty lies.

I’m a woman. Didn’t expect to see shoes on the list!!

High heels.
Actually, I never thought of this either, but it makes perfect sense really. They are designed to draw attention to the calves and ankles, and of course they promote a rather base mental image of street walkers. Not what you really want people thinking about you at Mass!

To the OP:

Would you mind providing a more precise definition of immodesty for purposes of this thread?

We got into a bit of trouble in the last thread because some people believe that immodest dress is simply that which is sexually tempting for others, while others appear to believe that immodest dress also includes anything eye-catching or attractive.

I think the OP has left it up to us to decide how we define immodest when we state our opinion.

Maybe I was unclear.

I’m not asking for her to list what she believes to be immodest. I would just like to know whether she is asking “What clothing is a sexual temptation to you?” or “What clothing attracts your (chaste) attention?” I’m pretty sure she means the former, but I’m requesting a little more clarity in hopes of avoiding one of the major misunderstandings present on another thread.

First: It depends on the situation. What is immodest at work or in class is not the same as what is immodest at the beach.

In normal situations, where everybody is expected to be fully clothed, I generally find low necklines (showing clevage, especially if the wearer is “full-figured”) and to a lesser extent, mini-skirts and shorts that are well above the knees to be “distractions”, though probably not necessarily proximate occasions of serious sin (not for ME; but for others who struggle with impure thoughts, they definitely could definitely be).

At the beach, it’s a bit different. I guess two-piece swimsuits that cover a reasonable portion of the chest are not an issue for me, but they may be for others (although I think that perhaps most would be more interested in girls wearing still-skimpier bikinis).

Uh, skinny straps on tank tops that show a sexy bra strap underneath. Belly buttons showing with sexy lowcut pants. A naval ring makes me think of impure thoughts about a girl because it makes her look very willing. Something about a naval ring just drives me bonkers.

when a woman has tight pants on, minnie skirts, shows her panties by using low-cut pants, cleavage showing.

I am a young man, and believe me, when I see a woman like that, the image of her stays in my mind for hours, then I have on occasion fallen into an impure action: solitary sin.

If the clothing reveals the shape of her personage, or shows skin, its immodest and causes lust.

The way a person acts, as well as the way they hold themselves also has a part to play.

Although, I might be a little extreme, I find the pictures for Catholic Singles to be showing too much sometimes. Go to:

catholicsingles.com/new/testimonial-1.html

Click on “Success stories” and scroll down to “Kerry and Troy” . I think Kerry’s dress is too revealing.

It might just be me, because in the back of my mind is a very strong leaning towards the priesthood, but almost definitely celibacy.

👍

Peace and God Bless.

Thank you keep the post coming. And yes to one of the posters actions can also be included.

GOD BLESS

The clothes really reflect the wearer’s state of mind. The clothes are used to project that state of mind. There’s no doubt about this whatsoever.

As in the other thread, whatever tend to show more body surface area is relatively more immodest. Whatever is tighter that shows all the curves and bumps the better, is relatively more immodest.
ditto, the more cleavage that is revealed. None of these are new. You can see all of these put to use in those movies of the 1920’s and on forward. There’s nothing new here.

Body language, behavior, and speech adds to the effect of the clothing.

I’ve never seen anyone obviously praying in a thong.

Hi,
You know what!! I am going to have my teenage girl read this thread:D It would be a good teaching tool for her about modesty.👍

Thanks to the OP.😃

Kathleen, as a parent of three teenagers (one a daughter) this subject comes up from time to time. Outside of the obvious clothes that do not fit properly (too tight) the most “immodest” comes from the attitude and body language. When a woman (or a man for the sake of fairness) desires others to lust after them, often times it shows.
