So I’m not totally losing my mind when I can’t remember the whatchmacallit-thingie?

My periods always been bizarre, but I’ve been getting them every 3 weeks or so for a few months now. No hot flashes yet, but moods are not great. I’m a little young at 42, but my mom was about 47, so … . Hoping that when I actually get done with it all my migraines will go away. (Happened with my grandma and a great aunt.)

My OB-GYN told me I would not know for sure that I had been through menopause until I had been a year without periods. I had my last period around my 53rd birthday (June 2007.) I have now been a year and a half without a period. Like my mother (fortunately,) I went through the change with a minimum of fuss and bother–no hot flashes or night sweats–just a complete cessation of periods. Like another poster put it, it was as if a faucet turned off. I went from having my usual very heavy period one month to none at all the next. I was prepared to be a little bit sad, but I can’t say I’ve missed it very much! I have also stopped having migraines–which is lovely.

Since both my mother and I had hysterectomies, pre-menopause, I don’t know for sure, however I remember my grandmother going through it (boy, do I remember!) and she was around 50. So I would guess early 50s.🤷

BTW, my peri-menopause started around 39 or so.

Google gives the average age of menopause in the US as 51.

I just wanted to remind people that paternal relatives age at menopause is absolutely no indicator of when you’ll go through. It’s only maternal grandmothers, aunts, sisters, etc. I got all scared when my paternal grandmother told me she was finished by 43, but my doctor told to not pay it any mind. My maternal grabdmother had a hysterectomy at 50 before any signs of menopause, her mother died(at 52) before going through it, my maternal aunt had a baby at 42, and my mom doesn’t show any signs of it. I think it would awful going through it early. It really limits women’s ability to space children and expand their families, especially since we’re getting married later.

I’m around 40ish and may have been having night sweats (or just piling on too many covers at night) but mostly I’ve noticed the last few years or so during that time of the month I get extremely over emotional. My cycles have been pretty much the same as always…sometimes with a few days difference but I’ve always had that. I just assumed the high emotional climate I seem to go through must be a precursor to the begining of Metopause not sure and can’t afford to ask a doctor right now.  I know my mom was 48 when that time of life hit her and my maternal grandmother had a surprise baby at 46 so who knows.  it may just hit me later rather than sooner. :o
