Hello,

Myself and a group of friends are looking to put together a Men’s bible study and I’m looking for some suggestions for a series - - A book that we could all read together, video series, etc.

The group will be about 6-10 people in size. All of the participants are between the ages of 26-30. Some are married, some engaged, and few are single.

As far as content, I’m very open to suggestions. I think what we are looking for is something that deals with Catholic men living out their faith in relationships, in their work and in their communities.

Ideally, the series would be something that is simple to follow and discuss when we get together. Having one, central resource would be nice, such as a book accompanied by an app. Even a book by itself where we read a chapter and then get together to discuss would be good. None of us have ever led a bible study/group before so we’d like something relatively simple for our first one.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I host a weekly beer ‘n bible study and we just finished Andy Stanley’s “Twisting the Truth”. He’s not Catholic, but is biblically focused and a wonderful teacher.

It has a DVD to watch weekly together and a book that we were able to download from the public library (also available on Amazon)

There is a book, “The Ordinary Path to Holiness”, that presents/explains the Catholic understanding of, well, “the path to holiness” or sanctity. To “get” this Catholic understanding at a young age (26-30) could save you all a great deal of time!

Dear LA,

May the Lord bless your “Men’s Bible Study Series”. I’ve read the book which fide has suggested, and it is excellent. It is a good way to begin because it can help all the men to better understand the universal call to holiness, as it has been lived by and taught by the Catholic Church.

Having read the book more than once, I’ve encouraged others to read it. The Introduction by the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFE is perfectly honest in saying:
"…The purpose of this book is practical – to help the serious Christian grow in the life of grace and to make progress on the journey Our Saviour spoke of when He challenged His disciples, “Follow Me!”
Fr. Groeschel concludes with a beautiful tribute, that I and others found to be true:
“…This is one of those rare books that is to be lived as well as read. But read it with your soul as well as your mind and with your heart as well as your eyes.”

Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll add those two to the list. Trying to develop some options for the group to choose from.

Dear LA,

Keep us posted on how your group develops and grows. I’ve been part of Bible Study Groups in different places where I’ve lived. Some have been all women groups and others have been mixed with both men and women participating. It has been especially good when married couples come to the study together.

It has been a blessing for me either way because each group seemed to be prayerfully seeking God’s Will in their lives. As I typed that last sentence I thought of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Mt. 7: 7-11 in which He tells us:
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish?If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him."

This is great that you guys are doing this. I’m part of a men’s group that has been meeting every other week for more than 10 years, and we are always having the discussion of what to read and discuss next. 🙂

When we are “in between” books, we tend to go with reading The Better Part that goes through the Sunday Mass readings. It’s an easy Bible study to drop in and out of, and everyone can keep track of where we are at.

Some other good books for a group of young men:
It’s not a book, but Exodus 90 is great for young guys. It requires some commitment, but many guys sort of crave that sort of spiritual adventure with goals to be achieved and difficulties to be conquered.

There are also some video programs like That Man is You that you might even want to ask your parish priest about opening it up to the larger parish.
