When I was 18, I was introduced to Gentleman’s Quarterly, or GQ, as it is better known. GQ was the guide on how to be a true gentleman, from the way a man dressed and groomed to how he treated a lady and how well he knew his wine and fine art. It taught a young man how to be elegant, sophisticated, polished, and well-educated. It was a must for all the young men of my generation and class.

But in the last few years, it has completely changed. GQ is now a mere shadow of its former self, going now for the “Maxim crowd” and dumbing itself down to the sophomoric level of those who think that “Girls Gone Wild” is high art.

However, there is a new magazine that has re-captured the style and sophistication of the former GQ, and its only drawback is its name: Men’s Vogue. Yes, the same company that prints Vogue. However, this men’s magazine is surpisingly excellent, and it reminds me so much of what classic GQ used to be. Though I hesitated at first to check it out (again, due to the title), I soon became a fan of it. Now if only they would change the name of it!

This is an interesting thread. As a publishing professional, I know the history of popular magazines, and the category of men’s magazines is a difficult one to make any money at. They just don’t sell well. There are tons of failed efforts in this category.

In general, they can be soft porn. I’m talking about the Maxim stuff. The Playboy stuff does cross the line, regardless of the articles. In a way, it keeps you perpetually juvenile: always 15.

Don’t forget to include Model Railroader and Coinage in the men’s magazine categories!

Some teen age boys like to peruse “Glamour” or “Cosmo” but not for the articles.

My dad used to subscribe to World War Two magazine,Shooter’s Bible, and Military History magazines.

And while I have never looked at GQ magazine,the truth is it was a magazine designed for gentlemen,how to dress, walk ,talk and act like you had money,even if the guy buying it didn’t.
There are all kinds of magazines for men without porno in them.
Also some women’s mags have changed too.

I have a 1926 Cosmopolitan magazine for women. No photos of nude men or advice about pleaseing a man in bed or any of that stuff.My grandmother would never recognize the new Cosmo mag.

But look at the success of field and stream, popular mechanics, Auto magazines, etc. You would think that a magazine could succeed if it was a best of these already popular magazines. Simple one stop shopping.
