This is obviously a complicated issue, but how does mental illness play into moral responsibility? I’m not thinking of the extremes (where someone has completely lost touch with reality), but of the more common types - depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc. It’s difficult for me to understand because it seems clearly wrong to say such a person doesn’t bear responsibility for their actions, but it also seems wrong to say they are guilty for having a mental illness. And in some senses these seem to be disorders that directly affect the will - e.g. depression can affect someone’s ability to motivate themselves to do anything, even if they know that thing to be their duty.
