For two weeks we’ve had my mentally ill cousin at our place, and he hasn’t visited a hospital once. Here’s the whole background…

Two Sundays ago, we’re all home in the afternoon and mom is on her phone asking someone, ‘where are you guys?’ I ask her if we’re getting visitors and she simply replies, ‘Reginald’. Reginald is another cousin, a frequent visitor. Hours later, Reginald indeed pops his head through the door to announce his arrival, but doesn’t enter the living room. Instead, mom and our maid (who comes from the same village as mom and my cousins, so she’s kinda family) go out to meet him, and mom again is on the phone saying ‘he’s arrived.’ Then mins later, Reginald does enter, and the whole living room is shocked.

He’s with his brother Narcisse, whom I heard was ill. Months ago, he comfortably completed his secondary education, but then started acting strange. He was running around the village, then he was nowhere to be seen for days. When they finally found him, he sort of entered into his own shell. He won’t speak or walk. If you leave him standing, he’ll just remain stationary - just like that. He has to be fed, bathed and washed, like a baby. At home we knew none of this - till when he was ushered into the living room like a huge trolly.

Later on, I drive my dad down to the barber’s…Mom and Reginald also hop in. I assume they’ve gone shopping but they don’t return with anything. Next day, I decide to ask dad what in the world is going on, and he explains:

Apparently they think Narcisse has been ‘cursed’ and he’s been brought to the city to meet the ‘doctor’ who had been recommended by another aunt. The day they he arrived, mom was actually on the phone with the doctor guy. So when they hitched my ride, they went to meet him, and he left them with ‘instructions’ (dunno what they are). This makes my blood boil.

Mom obviously didn’t want to tell anyone (especially me) about his arrival because he knew I’d be the most vocal opposer, as I’m the most outspoken member of our household. All of us are employed so we are too busy to care for him. At least he’s with his brother, but stil we won’t do him justice…We leave as early as 6 and return as late as 10.

But he’s now in our hands and we need to do all we can to make him better, but this is the most baffling part that has hastened me to type this post.

He hasn’t been taken to see any specialist, hasn’t seen a doctor yet. Instead, mom and the others seem to be placing faith on pastors who can, sort of reverse the curse.

We are all confirmed Catholics at home. You can argue that mom is the most devout, she prays a lot and is involved a lot in communities. However, she seems to place a lot of faith on these pastors and envangelists as well, and has invited several at home for some bizarre healing sessions, one of them being an ‘intense’ prayer session with all doors locked and lights off. This other day, I return home and there’s another pastor, shouting his head off. After he left, I angrily told mom that she is a Catholic and she should stop listening to all these pastors with their bizarre rituals and interpretations. I also told her that if this was my own house, I’d’ve thrown him out on the spot. Mom only smiles wryly. She says, “I’m off for a church leaders’ meeting” to which I replied “I’m surprised you still need the meeting while the pastor has told you everything you wanted to hear”.

The pastor with the lights off ritual has also been summoned to pray for him. I already told everyone at home that I won’t cooperate with him in any way. He walks in, I walk out. After a prayer session, when I return, mom jubilantly says he’s ‘treated’ several people and that there’s an improvement in him. To which I tell her I don’t want to be told anything. To which she replied “we’re trying all options”.

Friends, what do I do? I feel we’re massively letting my cousin down by not taking him to a medical specialist. It’s been weeks and he’s the same. How do I confront my parents and tell them to make some sensible decisions? I’ve avoided to bring up the issue, because the few times I’ve done so with other problems, we end up arguing, not speaking or someone starts crying. I’m really baffled at the way mom has handled the whole issue, she’s knows very well I wouldn’t approve, thus she’s not being transparent.

Sorry for the long post!

Wow! I think you might win the award for a problem with not many people can relate to. You are certainly right that your cousin needs medical help. Since I don’t know the laws of your country, my best guess would be to go seek help from the court. Perhaps you can have yourself or another competant person made his legal guardian until he is treated? This sounds like a really serious situation for your cousin. What you are describing could be the result of an injury, or poisoning, or trauma, or a brain disease. He really needs to be seen by a doctor and should not be put out on his own.

For sure not many people will relate with what I’ve posted. Really surreal. I know it sounds all reckless, but we’re all giving him some of our little time. He’s being taken care of quite well. He never responds to anything you say, but we all try and crack jokes. The only blip is that he hasn’t seen a specialist. I don’t think it requires court action or anything legalish, and anyway, never rely on our courts for speedy decisions. 🙂

Goodness. Do everything you can to convince your parents to take him to a medical doctor/psychiatrist.
I’ve known many people with bi-polar/schizophrenia illnesses and they often appear one’s early twenties and it sounds as if your cousin is this age? Not that your cousin has these illnesses, but you’d want to rule them out, or any other psychological issue like depression. And if he does, he will need medication asap to stabilize him, the sooner the better.
Also, a physical illness could be causing his behavior.

If I were you, I’d explain to my parents that in addition to whatever pastors they have doing whatever healing rituals they are doing…he should see a doctor, to make sure nothing is medically wrong with him. Remind your parents that the priests are not medical doctors and that if something is medically wrong with your cousin, even the priests would want him to see a medical doctor.

.
You’re quite accurate on his age, and it can be anything you suggested, so thanks 🙂 Just a bit of a correction, it’s pastors from different denominations. Not priests. Like the one I highlighted above, always has a supernatural solution to EVERYTHING. EVERY PROBLEM. I’m sure a Catholic Priest would offer sound advice…

And sure, I think I need to face them more directly.

Praying for him. It sounds like he needs to be diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist for mental illness. God bless you.

Perhaps you could also speak with your local Catholic priest, and maybe convince your mom to speak with him, as well? It sounds like she thinks she knows a lot more than you about religion and “curses,” and is therefore not willing to listen to you. Perhaps she would listen to a priest (then again, she might not–but I’d give it a shot anyway).

Will pray for you and your family. :gopray2:

Please speak to your parish or any other priest for advice. Perhaps he could visit your home, see and pray over your cousin and then advise your parents to take your cousin to a doctor. Your parents are more likely to listen to him.
Praying for all of you.

altms wonders : "I feel we’re massively letting my cousin down by not taking him to a medical specialist. It’s been weeks and he’s the same."

Why do so many people think that the ONLY reasonable thing to do is go to a Doctor?
And, in this case, it is not a Doctor, but a psychologist.

Up until about 100 years ago, there was NO SUCH THING as psychology (much less a psycho-Therapist).
So, for the last 6000 years, people had nowhere to take people who seem to be “crazy.”
Maybe they could find a priest (or other sympathetic person) to speak with the person.
Or, if they suspected demonic possession, take that person to an Exorcist.

Jesus, in the New Testament, healed many people by casting out their demon.
Jesus gave the power to cast out demons to His 12 Apostles.
This is a tried-and-True method of dealing with certain emotionally-sick people.

There are MANY lousy psycho-therapists out there.
And, most of them are Atheists (or, Agnostics).

My opinion: If Mom wants to deal with this in her own way, she can do it that way.
It is her house, and she certainly has the right to have things go her way in her own house.

Truly, OP, if you REALLY want to get involved, report your Mom to the Child Protective Service (or, the Adult Protective Service).
Then, THEY will send out an investigator, who will forcibly remove your cousin from the house, place him some place safe, and refer him out for therapy (that is, IF they think he needs therapy).

True thing she can do whatever she wants, it’s her house. That’s why I can only complain. No need for Child Protective Services, we’re taking care of him quite well. Look, if he’s possessed by demons and they’ll be removed, then I’m happy with that.

Some of our extended family have had such ordeals before. They’ve been ‘healed’, but just to come off worse than before. I can’t place full faith on them.

I still feel a specialist needs to have his say. And it doesn’t matter whether he believes in God or not.

Certainly, because you have had such terrible results in situations like this in your Family in the past, I can see why you are so pained about this particular problem.

Are you willing to “go against” your Family a bit, and take your Cousin to see someone?
If not a Therapist, how about a County Social Worker?

Either way, I am including both you and your Cousin in my Prayers for the next week.
This is the BIGGEST gift I have to offer to anyone.
You have “earned” it … and your Cousin slides in too, as part of you.
Good luck to you and yours.

Certainly, having a poor Family history of things working out in situations like this one, I can see why you are so pained about this particular problem.

Thanks very much. Let me be frank, I don’t mind taking him to see someone myself. But thanks for the prayers, he needs them more than I do.

This is extremely disturbing.😦 It sounds like he’s had some kind of severe mental collapse.

There are symptoms of schizophrenia where the person can become catatonic, disorganised in their thinking, unable to speak, etc. I’m not saying he’s schizophrenic, but he’s obviously developed some kind serious problem.

He needs to be in a hospital. Keep in mind that even the Church, when investigating demonic oppression, etc, attempts to rule out medical reasons for erratic behaviour first, not afterwards.

There’s also the possibility that if he were to worsen and die (God forbid) there could be a question of negligent homicide on the part of those who knew of his state but did not seek medical help.

Any updates, OP? I honestly have been fretting about this poor man 😦

God is God of the natural and supernatural: With prayer asking for guidance we proceed with what God offers in the natural way. We read in Sirach 38-1-l5 Hold the physician in honor for he is essential to you and God it was who established his profession.

My approach to any situation is to apply everything I know about reality and the particular situation. I found that there is not only a natural approach, but a supernatural approach as well. Prayer is such an approach. There is the faith approach. This is one your mother is using. But what faith, faith in non-christian healers, or christian healer? The Church teaches all her children that they are temples of the Holy Spirit, and belong the the “priestly people”
Is the man affected baptized, when we are baptized we become the adopted children of God sin is removed, and we are exorcised. If we are not, then the devil can cause havoc with our souls. You can as a “priest” perform a simple exorcism of your own by invoking the Name of Jesus Christ and commanding the devil to leave (if this is the case, and you won’t know sometimes if this the case.) I f he wasn’t baptized this may very well be the case. Your mother is not completely wrong, I don’t know the pastors procedure so I can’t judge. I have successfully performed a simple exorcism over a priest and assembly of Christians by using the Name of Jesus Christ ( I my Name they will …) Some don’t understand their own faith and what they can do. If what you do is in love for your neighbor, you can be assured that you are doing the will of God
