Just a caution. Black Cohosh can make your blood pressure rise - if you have a problem with high blood pressure it is not advised (by holistic drs. no less) to use it. My own Gyn told me not to use it as I tend to get high blood pressure from medicines - I am borderline high, not high enough to take something for it but high enough to watch it. I also tended to high blood pressure when pregnant.

Also, do get a book about vitamins and natural rememdies and check in it because some vitamins need to be taken at a different time from others or you end up counteracting their effectiveness. I have a book somewhere and when I find it I will let you all know the title.

Marilyn Shannon’s book “Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition” is a great jumping off point. It is not a very expensive book to purchase and will give you some great insites.

Some other books to look into are “What your Dr. Never told you about Menopause” and the companion book (should be read first but was written second) “What your Dr. Never Told You about Peri-Menopause”.

Dear Thann,
I just picked up some black cohash at the store yesterday, as a matter of fact. I also am taking St Johns Wort and Evening Primrose, plus lots of calcium. Also, my red blood count was a little low, so I started on iron and it’s improving. So, I’m trying to deal with this naturally. Thanks for the tip, hopefully the Black Cohash will help with the periods. I know my mood is better after taking that other stuff. I was really depressed this summer.
Get some vitamin C to take along with that iron! My doctor explained that most iron needs to be taken with vitamin C and/or a high-C source in order to be fully absorbed…
Take the calcium & the iron separately from each other; some forms of calcium can block iron absorption. (I drink calcium fortified OJ at breakfast & take calcium during the day, then take the iron at bedtime with vitamin C).
You really do feel better after a while; it just doesn’t seem that way right now! But do get your blood count back up, anemia can be dangerous. Lots of protein, & keep at the supplements…

Periods are weird in the beginning. I went 3 months without one, then lasting 15 days. Ugh. Then for the next two years I had one every 6 months. Just enough to aggravate me. Add to that the hot flashes, emotional mess and forgetfulness, and my husband has burned up his purgatory. 😛

Because of breast cancer history in my family, I am not a candidate for HRT. I have found that increasing soy in my diet is a lifesaver. Also good to prevent osteoporosis. This stuff is heavenly:

It’s not bad calorically, either. And don’t let anyone tell you that losing weight is impossible after menopause. I’ve lost 30 since July!

:rotfl: Wow!! Is that ever me!!!

Well, my period ended. Now I’m feeling like my self again. I finished a deck I was building and started walking again. I think exersise is important. When I’m inactive I start feeling depressed.

Exercise is the key for me too. I get very blue when I’m inactive around “that time of the month”. It’s the last thing I feel like doing, but if I don’t----I just sit around feeling sorry for myself and crying:(

Well ladies, after not having a period in over 2 months, I’m having the heaviest period of my life. I had the worst period mishap of my life yesterday while we were at a museum. At least the girls got to witness how a woman deals with very bloody pants in a public place, and how to bum a tampon from a stranger in a restroom.(Don’t they ever stock those feminine products machines anymore? )

No hot flashes yet, but I’ll admit, the last few months I’ve really been emotionally more unsteady. My 11 yer old daughter tells me that some of her friends’ moms are also going through "mentalpause’. LOL. Good Lord, I feel like I’m hemmoraghing here. Not only that, my daughter is very pre-teenish, and frankly, getting a wee bit sassy in her own right. Gee, I’m so looking forward to going through menopause while she enters puberty!

I was kind of hoping that I just would have the smoothest transition and that I wasn’t going to get anymore periods. No, instead I get to bleed like a pig, how fun! This doesn’t seem like a good plan. Why do women have to go through all this misery???
I certainly hope you’ll have an easier menopause than me. I’m 53 and going through menopause for the last 10 years and still not done. I’ve had 3 D&C’s already for erratic and heavy bleeding and several different medications. The only things that work are the progestins, and they all have bad side effects on me - such as increase in migraines. Lately I’ve been having week long periods every 2 weeks. Sigh…now trying Prometrium to regulate me. I get hot flashes but they’re bearable. The night sweats are a little more disturbing. I don’t know if this a problem for you but the libido has totally disappeared. Doc wants me to try a testesterone pill or patch but I’m kind of leery of the side effects such as facial hair! Oh what fun!

Hi ,i think that alot of medications take away the libido .Facial hair ,i thought was just a fact of life ,as i’ve had that for as long as i can remember, till these past few years.I’ve done the waxing, not in to it .Seems for me to make the hair that comes back stiffer, courser.I have my teens pulling at my facial hair every couple of days ,with tweezers.I’ve gotten used to it.Yup,excersise is good for lots of things, stress that comes with most things.Tee hee,it gets stressfull for me to even think about excersise!I end up going for my walk, not far ,as i am disabled, yet it helps me sleep better, feel better about myself. One of the things i want to do when i am stressed is sleep, yet i find that if i excersise,my sleep is a better kind of sleep.Hugs to you all,Blessings, freshwater

I know I need more exercise. I do walk, when I’m up to it. I also have fibromyalgia, arthritis and a bad back so most of the time I I’m either too tired or in too much pain to exercise.
I just can’t imagine pulling out facial hair! ouch:eek: I think I’d rather shave and keep shaving. lol

That shook me up so much that I went straight to the drug store and bought a product called Remifemin. It’s black cohosh, a long-studied herbal remedy for the maladies of menopause. It’s over the counter and safe (as opposed to hormone treatment).
There have been mice studies that indicated black cohash increased the spread of breast cancer, although nothing has been definatively proven for humans.

🙂 Dear Veronica,hi,I don’t know what fibromalgia is ,hope that s how you spelt it,sounds serious.I do know about the arthritis and bad back.I live with pain from it daily,a few months ago my doctor gave me a cane to walk with ,just to keep me walking. He has told me several times that i am never going to get better, over time it will get worse.I live with a catch twenty two sitution, when i am stressed i go into pain, when my physical goes into pain ,i go into mental stress.I have post tramatic stress symdrome, anxiety, depression.I hurt my back when visiting a store, all the shelves were stocked wrong, heavy tables were on the top shelf,it came down on me.My back will never be the same again.I lived with this for a lot of years now. When some one says that thier back hurts ,like you have stated here ,i sure do feel for them. Some days its hard for me to convince myself to go out of the house,i have to work on my self to get out and excersise. Its like fear factor for me.I been relaying on God daily to get thur most every thing. He sure has come thur for me.So i don’t sweat the small stuff too much ,like facial hair. :whacky:
I am praying for you ,to have relief from your back problems.Hugs, freshwater ❤️

I like the title “mentalpause.” I know I’m suffering from that… Some days, I can barely remember my name.

Regarding menopause. I had my last period about a year and a half ago. During my youth, I had my period every 25 days. No cramps, nothing. I’m my mid-40’s, I would have two periods in one month and one the next month. I attributed it to stress. Things returned to normal for a year or two, then the time between periods gradually became further and further apart, until they stopped.

I’m not taking any medication, no hot flashes, mood swings and it’s delightful. My mother said she didn’t have any menopause symptoms, either.

Since I didn’t get benefit of my reproductive system because I never married, at least God blessed me with peaceful menopause.
