Can I receive ashes although I am not yet a Catholic? I am a candidate in RCIA.

YES - you may 👍… I will pray for you on your journey …

May God Bless you and all of those journeying with you :gopray2:

Point of disclosure - I have been praying for all RCIA candidates this year * with special tenderness - my eldest son is coming into the Church this coming Easter 😃 … after years of working witht he RCIA - about a decade and a half - my son has decided to join … God’s ways are mysterious and wonderful :yup:*

Thank you for yr prayers Yada. I am happy yr Son is joining the Church 🙂

You can recieve ashes even if you had no intent of converting. An older woman I know who is Lutheran has received ashes in the Catholic Church for many years because she just isn’t able to make it to her own church on Ash Wednesday.

Our pastor commented yesterday during his homily that a number of protestant pastors in town have come regularly to our Mass on Ash Wednesday, and wear their ashes through the day.

My special intentions for Lent are for all RCIA candidates. I can’t wait to welcome you home!

🙂

May God bless you as you go through this very special Lenten season.

Yes you can. This a great tradition the catholic church has. Welcome

Only the seven Sacraments are reserved to Catholics. [Note that others may receive the sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony in their own community, but not in a Catholic ceremony].

Sacramentals, such as ashes, holy water, medals, rosaries, etc, are available to all who understand their meaning.

With prayers for all those in RCIA. I led the program for several years and miss it. Unfortunately age caught up with me, and I am no longer up to active participation in the program.

This is a weird question and i hope someone can help me. I am a protestant who is going to begin RCIA in the future by the grace of god, but i am going to my first ash Wednesday mass tomorrow i have been to mass before but never ash Wednesday, i am braining my mother who is not a catholic and is not going to receive ashes even though i told her she can, is that allowed … we both know we are not allowed to receive the Eucharist . also when the priest marks you with ashes do you say a response or no. and what is this i have heard about the part of mass where you say i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters ETC being omitted…
Thanks.

My understanding is that all Baptized Christians can receive ashes. Good luck on your faith journey.

Anyone can receive ashes. Ashes are not one of the sacraments, though they are sacramentals. In a Catholic Church, only a Catholic can participate in the sacraments (Eucharist, Reconciliation), but non-Catholics can participate in some sacramentals, such as ashes or holy water.

An anecdote I heard from Fr Benedict Groeschel on EWTN. He said that a Jewish woman received ashes on Ash Wed, and he later asked her why. She said that they were free and it couldn’t hurt.

also when the priest marks you with ashes do you say a response or no.
No response is prescribed. If you felt like saying “Amen,” I’m sure that would be fine too.
and what is this i have heard about the part of mass where you say i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters ETC being omitted…
The distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday takes the place of the ordinary penitential rite.

I myself don’t attend AW. Even for Catholics, it is not a day of obligation.

No verbal response is expected when one receives ashes. Anybody can receive them, even non-Catholics.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA

Welcome to the church. I teach RCIA and I am overwhelmed when adults make this step.

Yes, you may receive ashes. Ashes on Ash Wednesday are a Sacramental, not a Sacrament like Eucharist. Please come and participate.
