Maybe it’s an American thing. 🤷 To say “T minus eleven days” means it is eleven days until some anticipated event.

I’m so glad that our pastor was allowed to begin the new translations earlier and that gave us time to get used to the new responses and the melody to the sung parts so we are much better prepared for Advent to begin.

I certainly hope you’re going to ask the pastor before removing church property to sell it… I seem to remember a certain Christ who was rather irate about money changers in the church…

(and yes, the above is humorous. One bad joke deserves another)

What would be ironic: the REAL final countdown is only 10 days away and the final judgement comes.

What amazes me is the number of traditionalists who rarely if ever attend the OF who are so excited about this new translation… they don’t like the OF now, or even attend it, and most won’t afterwards anyway… so why the lack of charity in trashing the current translation when they won’t be satisfied anyway?

The phrase “T-minus” is indeed most frequently used in countdowns and is yet another innovation of our beloved but now-beleagered space program.

The “T” likely means “time.” So “T-30:00” can be seen as “Time minus 30:00,” as the “minus” indicates a backwards count. Once a rocket has launched, the elapsed time since the flight began is shown in NASA’s official clocks by the less popular “T-Plus” since the clock is moving forward.

The new translation’s debut certainly fits into the anticipation that countdowns are renowned for.

Interesting bit of trivia! Thanks! 👍 I use that phrase all the time and I never thought about where it came from.

The sense of the word that is being used here is this one (from Merriam-Webster):
4. a : praise, glorify

b : to speak well of : approve

In fairness, the USCCB did have a revised translation completed in 1996 and were told to hold off because JP2 was going to issue a 3rd edition of the Roman Missal in a few years.
 
Anyone planning a farewell party for the old translation. It did put in almost 30 years of faithful service.

Anyone want to write a eulogy for it? Using dynamic equivelence principles, of course.

Some Protestants are still using some of the old translations, aren’t they?

Yes, that attempt (1998) was completely unsuitable and was rejected. The document Liturgiam Authenticam was issued because of that “translation” and because of all the trouble there was translating the Catechism of the Catholic Church accurately.

At that point, ICEL was also completely disbanded and re-staffed and Vox Clara was founded by the Holy See to oversee all translations going forward.
 
I am very excited! It seems the people in my parish are not as excited as I. It was funny, at one mass we learned the new profession of faith before mass, and then when it came time to sing it for real, I swear I was the only one, along with the lead singer to sing the thing. I chuckled a bit.

Does anyone know of anywhere that I can find a list, or a complete guide to the new changes? I have been looking and can’t seem to find one online.

Sure, try here (look under “Sample Texts,” and for more information under “General Resources”). The people’s parts, Eucharistic Prayers, and so on are all there.
