These changes didnt happen overnight, why do we all worry,we always have to have the biggest house and the shinest car…I am in a community of prayer and you know if it is not good enough to pray the psalms then i will find another but unless the psalms are changed i do not care who does what…when GOD is in charge he will make the change not a puny man.

Old thread… but… so you deny that the Church has the authority to regulate the liturgy and promulgate the necessary books? The Church is “puny man?” That doesn’t sound like a Catholic viewpoint to me…

According to our Diocese the new LOTH is still at least 5 years from print. It seems the same discussions are taking place over this as the Missal.

I think depending on where the liturgy of the hours is given, the old version should be ok. For example if it’s given at a senior’s residence, the old version is best because the residents will be familiar and able to follow it. Other locations, one will have to judge and see if its worth it. Not everyone can handle change.

This is all gossip andpoor insight, nobody knows anything, altho they worked a LONG time on the changes, voted on it mulled over it prayed on it i hope ect…for a good while they meaning Bishops and cardinals and several committee’s. vatican 11 God help us…was worked on for 30 yrs or more, what i am saying is it might be 10 years or more before anything will be done…so pray for you,for me and for those who dont even pray liturgy and that the Blessed Trinity will call them to do so!

Hello All,

I apologize if any of these questions have already been answered, but I looked around and I didn’t see anything addressing these issues.

First, I was wondering if the new translations coming for the mass would have any affect on the Liturgy of the Hours? I know these aren’t explicitly related, but I thought there was some correlation.

Second, after a long hiatus I’m thinking of getting back into the habit of praying the Hours. I wondering if anyone has any views on the 4 volume set vs the single Christian Prayer book. I remember that one of the things I did find a bit frustrating about the Liturgy of the Hours was the constant flipping back and forth, to say nothing of getting half way though a prayer before realizing I was on the wrong day. I’m told the 4 volume set has less switching back and forth so I’d be very interested in that if true. Can anyone verify this?

Any guidance would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Not at this time. In the future, yes, but not at this point. When it does change, there will be a new edition of the Liturgy of the Hours; it won’t be just “substitute such-and-such prayer for this prayer.”

Will the text for the Liturgy of the Hours be changed when the new Mass translation comes out later this year too?

If not, won’t it be sort of asymmetrical, because each would have a different response to “The Lord be with you”? I would imagine there might be other portions in the Hours that will differ from the Mass.

My understanding is that there will be a new translation of the Liturgy of the Hours. My understanding is also that, given the 10-ish years it has taken to translate the Missal, no one should hold their breath waiting.

I think I heard somewhere that they are going to start a new translation, but it hasn’t even begun yet. So, yeah if it took ten years for the mass we’re easily looking at twenty for the LOTH.

Hard to say… the Revised Grail Psalter is already complete and confirmed. Many of the closing prayers (Sundays, saints’ days, etc.) are taken from the opening prayer of the Mass, which is complete. The readings in the Office of Readings and other hours would likely not change, so the main things needed would be closing prayers for the 4-week Psalter and Commons, various antiphons throughout the LOTH, the intercessory prayers and of course the dialogue parts in the Ordinary. I don’t know that that is a 20 year project.

I just purchased the 4 volume set last year, and I can’t afford to purchase another set.
I’m sure God will forgive me for using my existing books for “Liturgy of the Hours”. :signofcross:

Don’t worry you have lots of time, and when the current office came out, for pastoral reasons it remained licit to use the 1962 breviary. I’m sure the same will apply again.

but the psalms are already done, and so are many of the prayers (they are the same as mass ,so they just need to be grabbed from the new missal)

Well, it sounds like I’ll have plenty of lead time to start saving my nickels and dimes for a new set!

In all seriousness, not a bad idea. Squirrel away a little at a time into a fund for things like this and we’d be surprised at what we can afford!

*Thank you for your query concerning the breviary or Liturgy of the Hours.

Unfortunately, it is hard to determine an accurate answer to your question. However, I believe that there will be no change to the texts of the Liturgy of the Hours in the near future. Let me explain. In October 2009 ICEL completed the majority of its work for the Conferences of Bishops on the Roman Missal texts and has been engaged in correspondence with the Conferences and the Holy See about future work. While many of the Conferences feel that the Liturgy of the Hours should be revised sooner than later that feeling does not seem to held in Rome where it is felt that that translation project needs “more reflection”. I would take that to mean that any new publication is at least five years away*

That is interesting. I’d also imagine that many of the commission members are probably on to other projects and finding the time to get involved in another translation project may be difficult.

Okay, so when doing the Hours, what would be the right response to, “The Lord be with you”?
