Those of you who are experts in proper English verbiage, can you please explain the following message from Fatima?
"You saw Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If people do what I ask, many souls will be saved and there will be peace.” Sat Jul 13, 1917
I know some people that say that this means that souls in hell can still be saved because Our Lady is asking us to pray for the souls that go to Hell. I tell them that no prayers will avail those in hell. I tell them that this is referring to sinners, but they insist that this message is talking about souls in hell not poor sinners.

Can somebody elucidate?

“You saw Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save them…”

Hmmm, no where in this sentence does it mention souls in Hell so I don’t know what how it can refer to souls in Hell :ehh:

She’s talking about saving the poor sinners from going to Hell.

Just to add, if she was talking about praying for those in Hell, it would be heresry and the apparition would be false, it wouldn’t change Tradition. Public revelation trumps private revelation.

I agree.

it seems to be that
a)ok, you saw hell it is a reality
b)poor sinners go there
c)pray so that they won’t.

Theologically, it must be true that the “them” in the phrase “in order to save them,” refers to poor sinners in general, not to people who are in Hell. But the syntax is confusing; probably a bad translation from the Portuguese.

Ok, I hadn’t thought about it. Maybe it is a bad translation. Anybody here know Portugese and has access to the original message?

Let’s use another example. You saw “jail” where the bodies of poor criminals go. In order to save the criminals from jail we will have a trial. They are still criminals but if they are judged not to be deserving of jail they will not enter jail. You can be on the jury and save them from jail. They may still be guilty but have been absolved of punishment because you, the jury member saved them.

My mother tongue is Portuguese, but I never found the original n Portuguese.

Just a second… Internet search engines are great, but it can be pretty hard to find something specific about something so popular as Mary’s apparition in Fatima. In the end, I just tried the site of the Fatima sanctuary and of the Vatican, in which I was successful.

I did find the original handwriting and all, but it was almost unreadable. Fortunately, the printed version was available too:
— Vistes o inferno, para onde vão as almas dos pobres pecadores, para as salvar, Deus quer establecer no mundo a devoção a meu Imaculado Coração. Se fizerem o que eu disser salvar-se-ão muitas almas e terão paz.
And here’s my take at it:
You have seen hell, where the souls of poor sinners go to. In order to save them, God wants to establish in the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If you do what I say, many souls will be saved and they will have peace.

I agree. It is talking about the place where poor sinners go to (not ones already there). It does not mean that souls already in Hell can be saved thru devotion to her Immaculate Heart.
