Messages at Fatima

Hi everyone,

I found a webpage that briefly discussed some of the things that the Blessed Virgin Mary spoke at Fatima.

Coming from a protestant background, I’m having a bit of a hard time with these messages.

Don’t you think that they are a little too centered on Mary?

I mean, I know everyone says that her ultimate goal is to glorify Jesus.

I don’t know…these seem a little too Mary-centered.

I understand the whole idea of praying through Mary and the saints, but some of this stuff…like God placing peace in her hand that it is from her that we must ask for it, Jesus wishes to establish devotion to Mary and she promises salvation? And then the whole “in reparation for the offenses committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary”??? Shouldn’t that be “in reparation for the offenses committed against the perfection of GOD”??? Why doesn’t Jesus want us to establish a devotion to HIM? Or to GOD?

Usually I like the Marian apparitions, but these seem a little…out there.

I hope this makes sense. Can anyone help me out on this?
 
I don’t know if I can help you much or not, but to me there is a larger context in which these things need to be viewed.
Remember this passage in the Gospels?
25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand; 26 and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?

33 "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.Mt 12:22-35
Now - the main question that must be answered bout the apparition and the messages is whether it is of God or of Satan - Good or Evil. Remember that Christ says that from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. And that a Kingdom cannot be divided against itself. Yet look at this one simple prayer that was taught to these simple, uneducated children.
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.
Could an agent of evil, a demon, speak such words? Teach such a prayer without being “divided against itself”?
Likewise with the items you present. They speak of peace; of sacrifice in the name of who? - In the name of Jesus (O Jesus it is for the love of you…) I do not believe that this is possible - Not if Mt 12:22-35 is correct.

Now - all of that said, it is important to remember that Fatima, Lourdes etc - all such apparitions, though approved by the Church, remain in the realm of “private devotion”. You are free to accept and act upon them or to ignore (though not reject) them. So if these things disturb your peace in Christ, then just let them be for now. Instead remain focused on Christ and on your journey toward him in the holy Sacraments of the Church.

We must take something like this in context of which it is written and in the spirit of the times it was written. I am going to give a guess as to what this meant at the time it was given. It could be that when Mary was appearing, people were sceptical about the apparition or about what the children were calling “immaculate heart”. This was probably a new phrase and many were sceptics at first and therefore said some very unflattering things about her immaculate heart because they just didn’t believe. Maybe some were even the clergy.

Heart means love.
Love for her son, and love for her new children, us.

“Jesus wishes to establish a devotion…”

That was Jesus’ very own mother. When someone honors your mother, they also honor you. It is the same with Jesus. Jesus is never offended when anyone honors His mother. Quite the contrary. And devotion is to show honor, not adoration.

“Jesus promised salvation to those who embrace it.”

This as merely His choice and another way of helping us. But to embrace means to embrace Christ as she did, with the whole heart and whole soul. It certainly dosen’t mean embrace this and forget everything else. It means if you chose to turn you life over to her heart, her hands, then she will guide you, under her protection, to a more sure way of finding you savior.

“peace in her hands”

God has so decided to put the peace of the world in her care. And we must ask for peace from her because it is the way God has chosen to carry out world peace, thru her intercession. And she did say if enough people prayed, there would be peace.​

I think it will make better sense if you read the whole thing. I remember she said that the Pope had to consecrate Russa to her Immaculate Heart and there would be peace. But that consecration had to be said and done in a very specific way which was not done at that time.

Just one comment, Mary is the Mother of God, and there is not greater person than her in all creation, higher than all the angels and saints in heaven. Her power is enormous, being
the Mother of God. It is awesome and we are most blessed to have her assigned as our very own mother by Jesus Himself hanging from the Cross.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I can see where you are coming from with your descriptions.

I guess my problem is my protestant upbringing. I am always weary of things that seem to be taking attention away from Jesus.

I think its the Catholic lingo. You guys have your own way of talking to one another about stuff that us protestants (and hope to be ex-protestant) just don’t quite catch.
 
If God had chose the BVM to appear to the seers at Fatima. The belief is that it would have been through the power of the Holy Spirit. Theres also a translation from English/Spanish going on here.

But heres a quote from Jesus Chirst to the Seer…

“I want My church to…out the devotion to the Immaculate Heart beside the devotion to My Sacred Heart.” And the church paided close attention to it, it still does. The First Saturday of Communion Reparartion was altered to the first five Saturadays as a result of a Apparition of Christ to the Seer. Lot if interesting info.

The Consecration of Portugal and Mexico alone are amazing facts in conversion. Check it ouit and prpare to be amazed. Marys victorys though very quiet are very real, and they are from God and comfirmed by God. Seems to me He has chosen Mary to be the messanger this period for the above reason. And at some point She will prevail. Thats already been foretold.

The yardstick by which everything concerning the Blessed Mother can be measured is summed up by her own words in Luke 1:46 “My soul doth magnify the Lord”

Nothing we do in the name of Mary (praying, asking), for Mary (devotion), etc. ever stays with her. It goes through her and shines on Jesus Christ.

I read somewhere that Mary asked the Apostles not to write about her a lot in the Bible because of her humility. They did this… but God wanted to honour her because He loves her and she is His Mother, and He wants the world to know that we can come closer to Jesus through Mary. (it is ultimately all about Jesus :)). So He has allowed the apparitions, etc, to happen, and Mary has only said there what is in His will 🙂

Mary leads us closer to Jesus.

Sounds like you know of some interesting stories about the BVM. Could you provide links so that I can read up on the incidents that you are describing?

I guess I still have a lot of the ol’ protestant fears stuck in me that by focusing on Mary so much, God will get jealous and will become unhappy with me.

God loves Mary much more than we can ever love her 🙂

as long as you go to Mary in order to come closer to Jesus, that is fine

and that’s how it works out in Catholic theology anyways, because that is what she does, she leads us to Him 🙂

I’m a convert from Protestantism too, but - read what the Saints said about Mary, there is really nothing to fear as long as you don’t think she’s a goddess, and the Catholic Church has never taught that.

would a painter feel jealous if you praise his painting?
